Made For More (Oliver Twist) - Original
- Entitled ‘Made For More’, an abstract interpretation of Oliver holding up his bowl before delivering the iconic line ‘Please, Sir, I Want Some More’. The colour ways are authentic to the original scene whilst also fitting in perfectly with the previously created pieces in the Oliver series. The warm light that shines on Oliver represents hope, hope for change which we see happens later in the narrative whilst the darker areas and cracking textures symbolise the negative aspects of the life that the young boy exists in, there is also a subtle colour reference of bright blues that are an abstract representation of the workhouse owner, Mr Bumble.

Make It Rain (Singin' In The Rain) - Canvas Limited Edition

- This was my partners’ mums’ favourite film and one that we watch each Christmas since she passed so it is an incredibly special piece and one that I wanted to do justice to. What I have done is to portray a damming indictment of the Hollywood film industry at the time through the chosen title. Cut throat approaches, the pressure on actors and actresses to deliver and earn others money whilst conveying an almost derogatory request directed at the actors and actresses. There was bad feeling and unrest within the cast of the original film where Gene Kelly scalded Reynolds for not being good enough in her dance scenes, there was also unrest with those who had previously been stars of the silent movies. I also saw it as an opportunity to create a ghost like quality for those lost in/to Hollywood. FYI the tone of this piece was driven through listening to System of a down - Lost in Hollywood, a dark song with great lines. Rather than simply try and recreate the iconic street and lamppost scene I have created a similar setting but a much darker version, where a gritty backstreet would exist just a short drive from the bright lights of Hollywood. The rain has stopped for now and a large puddle overlays the cobbles, the iconic lamppost is there with Gene Kelly depicted in twinkling lights, a large splash exists yet no one is there to create it, to further support the ghost-like quality. Genes’ iconic sports car is parked up on the street whilst a public payphone receiver hangs down, as if someone had to make a panicked call or possibly didn’t end too well. A sign hangs over the scene ‘Reynolds Dance School’ a nod to the above where she was slated. What I wanted to do was to suggest but not dictate, to make you think what is going on, to create your own story from what exists in the scene, all with a dark undertone running rife. I wanted to create a striking, beautiful piece that embraces everything that is wonderful about black and white art. To complete the original piece, my partner has put a tiny silver kiss next to her mums’ initials on the base of the lamp.

Mind Games (Matilda) - Original
- My concept, set within a classroom at Crunchem Primary School plays out a number of examples where the characters embark on mind games against each other to gain control, where bullies prey on the ‘weak’ and the timid expose a darker side.
Is Matilda that powerful in mind that she really can create such pranks and scares or is it all an act? If it is an act then an act of what? Key areas of interest where this is present within the scene are picked out with magical detail, is this a phenomenon or just your eyes playing tricks on you?
Key battles within the story are shown within the scene, Matilda vs Miss Trunchball who mocks and scalds yet is clearly of a fragile disposition. Trunchball vs Miss Honey where the hollow digs at the young woman are small fry compared to the lies and deceit that she has committed. The battle between TV and books is played out, with not only Matilda showing her destructive force against the devils’ box but the librarian Mrs Phelps getting torn into for her love of books and support of Matilda. Is Matilda working alone? Is this all the work of just one child or have others been pushed one step closer, where they are about to break?
As well as the dominant visual signs of disruption and rebellion within the classroom there are subtle scrawled messages on the back wall and the ageing desks that expand on this, I went for this especially as it has that side to it that mimics the classroom banter and name calling, petty albeit with a dollop of truth as the ignition. There is anger towards Matildas’ parents scrawled against the wall that builds to the point where a car gearbox has been smashed into a TV. This is a reference to her Dad being a mechanic who fills customers gearboxes with sawdust to swindle money. Driving (excuse the pun) the metal down into the TV is a sign of absolute disgust at Matildas’ parents who embrace the TV and how they treat people that trust them.
The battle between dark and light is evident in this piece and shown by the contrasting cold and industrial looking interior, spooky staircases, corridors and claustrophobic cupboards that we all remember compared to beautiful lighting and clear white walls. The room itself has been created from scratch, to deliver an intriguing scene that offers so much detail to study but where the intense detail is complemented with open spaces.
If you look deeper you will see that the darkest example of control and bullying is shown at opposing corners of the scene. You have the haunting chalk message on the blackboard (do ghosts really exist? Or do people just know too much?) that shows that Miss Trunchball has been keeping Miss Honey’s money from her. If you then look to the piano you will see how the magical detail that surrounds the books and leads to the hammer and then onto the smashed up part of the piano to reveal where the moneys been hidden.
All in all the piece showcases the destructive powers of the mind when used for ones own benefit, to control and confuse others to the point where you cant believe what your own eyes are telling you. -

My 2016 piece ‘Policemen & Pirates’ (Peter Pan) touched on the downfall of the ‘King of Pop’ and the controversy that engulfed him so for this piece I wanted to throw everything into depicting him in a way that epitomised his mastery of choreography and iconic stature.
This piece is 100% good and positive, allowing him to shine and command the canvas as he did the floor. A constant stream of his classic albums whilst creating ‘Moonwalker’ such as ‘Thriller’ and ‘Bad’ certainly brought back good memories listening to them as a kid, interestingly though listening to the tracks as an adult with a genuine love for music the mastery of Michaels’ work was so much audible.
This piece interprets the iconic stance from the film, placing him in the smoke-filled bar that threw out so much great colour and light and draws all of that together to form his body to once again light up the room, whether you choose to see it as simply a cool depiction of Michael or his ghost is up to you but I wanted to further expand on the style that I am working closely with and take details that are used to construct pieces such as ‘BALBOA’, ’Teach You I Will’ and ‘Love Will Find A Way’ and utilise them in a way that delivers a seriously cool piece of art that can simply be enjoyed and identified with.
The level of detail is pretty insane close up but comes together to work well when reduced down so as to grab your attention, I have included some zoomed in detail in this email. This piece has been created to showcase the potential and possibilities of expanding on music icons in this style that sees the detail and intensity adjust depending on the subject and their characteristics that are shown. I wanted to create a subtle sense of movement here to show that Michael has just moved into the pose you see him in, so a fluid drag of the leg or raise of the arm is portrayed in the intricate detail that radiates from the figure.
When you throw yourself into creating a piece like this and surround yourself with that persons’ work even though the piece keeps the dark out you cant help but feel sad to see how that star has fallen which I feel contributes to the power of the image. Ultimately my aspiration with this piece was to create something that was different to what exists by other artists and to avoid being ring fenced as just another icon that people would buy because of their love for that character, I wanted to do something genuine from one artist to another.

My Beautiful Wickedness (The Wizard of Oz) - Original
- This piece explores the character traits of the most destructive and powerful person within the story - the Wicked Witch of the West, a lady so full of rage that is born out of envying neglect that the fires still burn as fiercely as ever but does she still have a heart? Her blood dried up long ago and she knows any tears shed would wound her, possibly even be fatal if the floodgates were allowed to open. What we see of the wicked witch of the west is a woman scorned, an absolute bitch with terrifying powers who holds so much hatred towards her opposing sister that she didn’t shed a single tear when she was flattened, or actually was that just her protecting herself? Is Dorothy simply a scapegoat for something much deeper and older? There is talk of the wicked witch of the west falling foul to her fathers favouritism as a young girl with her sister being the apple of his eye - there continues the green theme again! What actually happened to make her skin literally turn green with envy?
For someone to be that full of hate and hurt they would have lost all sense of context and reasoning way back, she knows not what she does surely? Has her wickedness become a genuine art form for her? Are there any human qualities left under that shell of carbon? Does she still have a soul, a single strand of hope to see her be saved? Or is she too far gone? What this piece will does is take on a similar style and narrative to my 2016 ‘High Ho’ piece where I showed Snow White is a much darker light but where there were signs of innocence, fragility and hope and that is what I have strived to achieve with this piece. I originally planned to create a roomset but chose to focus on the throne to portray a stronger sense of power and dominance, a setting for where plans and spells are formulated, or a place to sit within her shell where she waits and 'bleeds'.
There is a window into the world outside through her crystal ball that rests against her throne, look closely and you will see the same scene as featured in ‘The Long And Winding Road’. The detail within the piece suggests that she is wrestling with her demons whilst retaining what is left of any good, is she too far gone? The decor is an intriguing mix of brutal objects and soft furnishings that glow green and subtle detailing that hints at a personality trapped. The aim was to create a real open-ended piece where certain objects make you question what has already happened possibly, the water? the slipper placed within a box that sat empty for so long? There is definitely more than meets the eye here and again something to consider in general. Just because someone can cause carnage doesn’t always mean that they are any less fragile underneath or vulnerable to further damage, more likely they just need setting free from the spell that has been cast. -

My Idea Of Heaven - Large Limited Edition

- This scene casts a window into Peter Pan’s magical Neverland and is a wonderful example of my ‘Storyteller’ works where
I strive to do things differently. This is not your usual take on Neverland, I wanted to go at this from another angle with the aim to create the most beautiful vista possible.
This is a classic example where a piece evolves mid-way through into something so much more than what I originally intended to create, making it so much more beautiful and engaging even if the visual traits are almost unchanged. This is my idea of Heaven.The sun is rising over the clouds, bringing with it new hope, with the warmth brings comfort. The upper branches of the trees and the mountaintops poke through the clouds with magical fairy detail dancing around them. If you then spot the pirate ship it does then make you question whether it is actually flying through clouds or sailing through a mist, a question of scale comes into play.
However, you interpret it the end result is truly immersive and captivating. I have long had an affiliation towards the Aurora since being lucky enough to have visited Lapland several years back, if you look closely you will spot them, look closer and you will see that they are actually made from peacock feathers! The beauty is within the detail here, there is no devil.
Creating this piece was incredibly calming and challenging, I had set myself a high target to achieve with creating the most beautiful scene imaginable. This is where the piece started to transform and take on a new meaning. For me and many I would hope that there can be no other place more beautiful than Heaven.
The more I worked into the scene it took precedence over Neverland, the detail is there of course but something exists that influenced my way of thinking. You will notice the two shapes that come together as one, adding this was powerful and incredibly emotional, it changes everything.
For within Heaven, as with Neverland, age is irrelevant, you become truly free, reunited. -
