Smile (The Joker) - Canvas Limited Edition #2PP

- It was initially going to be purely based on ‘The Dark Knight’ film with the wonder of Heath Ledger but for me personally from watching the most recent ‘Joker’ movie and being left completely open mouthed by the pure brilliance of the brutality and the utter sadness of the character and what happened to him, it took on a different form.
So, it started with a ‘Storyteller’ style piece where it’s this abandoned, derelict building that’s depicted as the asylum but done in a way that takes it to a whole different level by showing the characters. It’s a classic darkness and light concept that I love to work with and showing how closely that they can reside within a person, within a building, within their four walls. That was the aim to create something really dark, really beautiful but in a completely different way through showing the characters and touching on the battles that are going on within their heads and what that can ultimately lead to.
The decision to introduce the characters was a big one, it can spoil a piece, but the aim was to have them so that they are literally bleeding out onto the canvas, with sheer emotion that’s captured through the detailing. The idea being with the asylum is that it’s so difficult to leave but so easy to return and that takes on so many meanings.
This piece shows that contrast between the pure, sinister side of the Heath Ledger character where he’s absolutely seething within the shadows but then in complete contrast, we go across to Joaquin Phoenix where he’s totally lost in his own world. There’s no acknowledgement to the destruction that he’s causing, no remorse but ultimately happier and it’s showing how that can completely escalate and morph through. It’s been a wonderful piece to work on, one that has particular poignancy to me and I’m sure to many others.

Child's Play! - Canvas Limited Edition #5AP

- My portfolio is as diverse as it is huge but one thing that is for sure is that you thundering lunatics seem to consistently go nuts for how I portray the retro toys and games within my ‘Retrospective’ works. So, in the spirit of Christmas, feast your eyeballs on this chaotic beast!
What’s that saying? Go big or go home? Well home is no place to get ideas for your Christmas list, is it? My insanely popular ‘The Memory Remains’ series featured a quaint little toy shop that then opened out into a vast cave of wonderment. The architects and structural engineers amongst my collectors would easily have thought how the heck was that possible from the exterior but it’s all in your head as a kid, it was always bigger and brighter in your imagination than reality and I have embraced that time and time again.
It's 2023 and I intend to embrace this Christmas, so I have gone big for this piece, bigger than BIG Ken’s Bell! Eh? Sorry, welcome to how my mind works! If you get it, I love you. Whilst so many of us have those memories of visiting the local toy shop and all of it’s charm, some will always favour the sheer magic and scale of the one and only ‘HAMLEYS’ on the iconic Regents street in London. Does it get better than that? Don’t spoil it and say ‘Duncan’s Toy Chest’, oh hang on – talking of spoilers ;) And don’t you dare say ‘Argos’, or ‘Toys R Us’! Those pens were crap, and that blasted giraffe was a bit creepy.
So yes, I have gone big, bright and quite brilliant if you don’t mind me giving my trumpet a quick tootie toot toot! ‘Child’s Play!’ was a genuine joy to work on, one that embodies why I don’t start off with a regimented list of what to include, it just evolves, swells and explodes out everywhere – just like those grotty bottied pigeons! This is as much an opportunity to look within the toy shop as within my peculiar mind! There is so much to see and decipher, I won’t attempt to list out or to even explain, I will just let you enjoy the madness and magic!
Art to me is everything, it is my escape and my time machine. I was going to drop in a line from ‘Back to the Future’ about not needing roads but it’s late and my bulldog wants his dinner, and his arse is my enemy. However, speaking of roads it reminds me of this ability to escape. It’s cool, you can keep the violins locked away but at the time I was creating ‘Child’s Play!’ my car had a cracked wheel from a pothole the size of the cave from ‘The Goonies’. I remember getting a lift from a good friend back to the studio and trying to explain what the hell I was doing that day. Have a good look inside Boba Fett’s cab and try and detail that to someone! Welcome to my world, I love it and I am so proud that you lot love it too!

Free Spirit - Black & White (Breakfast at Tiffany's) - Canvas Limited Edition #1/5

- I have wanted to do ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s for an age. With each movie collection I always strive to create a piece that is pretty and beautiful to contrast with others that are much more dramatic and intense visually. With the 50th anniversary of the movie falling this year it was the perfect opportunity. What you see is very different for me, which is a good thing. There has been a move towards the introduction of characters when the piece warrants it and rather than seeing a scene that is absolutely littered with detail I wanted to make it all about the character, Holly.
I wanted to portray her as she was, rather than how she wasn’t as it suits my work and is authentic to my way of thinking. Without a genuine connection or reason there is always a risk of the image becoming hollow. The details that do exist help to tell the narrative but in a much more simplistic way that results in a much more powerful and poignant image. It’s called ‘Free Spirit’ based on Holly’s wish to not be caged but being told she puts herself in her own cage. It is her wish to be set free, she is such a complex character, high maintenance, but adorable and innocent. This sense of being trapped and needing to be set free is a concept that has ran through my work since day one, an emotion that is driven through personal emotions and one that resonates with so many.
This is a classic example of how, when planning this piece you end up doing something so completely different to what you thought you would do all that time ago, and I love that. It is that pull that takes hold, resonates and takes you off on a much more honest direction. What you see is everything laid out around her, the open bird cage with the dove rising upwards that is really beautiful. In contrast you have the blackened thorns and withering roses that are twisting around the cage and the foot of her stool. It’s a very dark element that builds on the concept of needing to be set free from the negatives and darkness and it is this detail against such an iconic image that makes it mine and authentic. It is all about freedom and restriction. The piece features butterflies and birds that represent freedom and transition, expression and the ability to spread one’s wings. I absolutely love her expression, so innocent, confident yet fragile. There is a personal connection to this film that makes it authentic.
Audrey Hepburn was born in Ixelles - Belgium, my Grandmother, Mary was born in Ypres and met my Grandad, Geoff whilst he was a soldier in the second World War as he came into her Parent’s cake shop. After the war, my Mother, Anne-Marie was born in Ypres before they headed to England to start a new life which, given the circumstances must have been daunting and challenging to say the least. My wonderful Grandma was heavily restricted in her later years and my Mother has been incredibly restricted due to my Dad’s condition - so what this piece symbolises is absolutely massive. -

We are the Dreamers of Dreams (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) - Large Limited Edition #5AP

- Welcome inside my mind, strange isn’t it! Many of you won’t know that this is the third piece that I have done on this classic story and film. The first two pieces were created as commissioned works back in 2015 when I first created my ‘Storyteller’ body of work. ‘Charlie’ and ‘Sink or Swim’ were obscure, narrative driven and dark, darker that one of Wonka’s bars of chocolate lodged in Augustus’ deep crevasses and folds! Really?! Sorry, like I said, welcome inside my mind!
‘Wolves, Wonderment and Wanderlust’ is a truly balanced boutique ‘Storyteller’ collection, it is dark, light, and downright bizarre, guess which one this falls under. The brilliant story writing (not by me!) lends itself to falling into all three but I have wanted to create a quirky and bizarre piece on this classic for an age so now was the perfect opportunity! As with my ‘Wind in the Willows’ piece, there is a vast number of opportunities to create a whole range of pieces on this masterpiece, but I must save some room for later! (You get it right?!)
As a kid, I remember the Roald Dahl books well and I will without doubt do a collection purely on his genius storytelling. Without a doubt though, the film that starred the amazing Gene Wilder is what stirs up my fondest memories, it just has everything! You know how I love to show the proximity of darkness and light and how they are interwoven, and the film does that and more. I just love it. The settings within the factory are iconic as well as the much more recent version that starred the brilliant Johnny Depp. It was crucial that my version didn’t end up being influenced by either of those, that would have been lazy and too easy. So, what you see is a glimpse inside my mind, my imagination. I hope you like it.
‘We are the Dreamers of Dreams’ takes the ‘Wonderment’ spot from this collection. The aim was to create that open mouthed reaction if you were to walk into the cavernous opening within the factory. Just don’t keep your mouth open too long, way too many parrots and toucans up there! There’s a lot to take in eh! The intensity of the backdrop is nuts, and that’s before you even notice the paddle steamer! There’s no earthly way of knowing which direction that’s going! Well, it’s heading into a tunnel but what lays in wait? That’s where you come in, I’ll pass the wheel to you.
The serene chocolate river is a contrast to the powerful waterfall that cascades downwards. That detail was introduced from my love of challenging myself technically. ‘Hey You Guuuys’ (Goonies) was a much earlier piece that featured magical waterfalls within a cave and I was waiting for a new opportunity, so here we are. This piece is a classic example of how I set off on a journey creating the scene but without being too concise and pre-planned.
I wanted it to evolve, to go off on random deviations as my imagination opens up. I guess that is what makes artists different to another, it’s how your mind works that makes the piece authentic and true. I wanted to inject an industrial quality but with a cute and colourful approach so that is why the pipes that transport god knows what are shaped as plastic bendy drinking straws. The ‘steam punk’ inspired paddle steamer is like no other. I didn’t want to use something like the films as like I said before, too easy, and if you have read my ‘Wanderlust’ narrative you’ll know why! The control rooms that are set within the rock walls are inspired by Gaudi’s architecture – drawing from a past art trip to Barcelona in my college days. Memories stick don’t they, it’s great to be able to bring this into my work in such a different way than I maybe planned back then.
Like I mentioned before, I love the dark element to the films, how it flips from light to dark without warning. I love the morals that are conveyed in the storytelling and especially the greed element. Since 2016, I have used the line ‘Greed Breeds Monsters’ in my work and it sits perfectly here. Greed really does breed Wonkas! If you hold that thought and seek out an element within the scene it can help to position what you are seeing. My lips are sealed shut, as if holding a handful of everlasting gobstoppers in my, well, gob!
So why the flamingo? Why not! My 2021 ‘Open Door’ piece was an earlier example of me opening my imagination and showing my random way of thinking. Is it the same one? Maybe, why not? They run for miles yet look like they skip leg day. Joking aside, I really do hope that I have done this justice, I know I am proud of it but when you are referencing such brilliance in storytelling there is quite some pressure there. I share an un-wanted affiliation with the battles that Gene Wilder faced, and I would love to think that my work would capture his sparkle and raise a smile if he could see. Rest in peace Gene. X
We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams, life is way too fucking short, it really is. We really don’t know what the future holds so embrace now, think bigger, dream bigger, be brighter, act with integrity and be authentic. Be a bit more Wonka!

My Spirit Will Live On (Pirates Of The Caribbean) - Hand Embellished Large Limited Edition 10/10

- This is my interpretation of The Pirates Of The Caribbean - The Curse Of The Black Pearl entitled ‘My Spirit Will Live On’.
My intention has always been to follow up on the 2016 Goonies piece ‘Hey You Guuuys’ and to create something that complements and contrasts, to showcase the enchantment of the pirate ship but in a different way. The narrative surrounding the Black Pearl is fascinating, being burned and send to the sea bed before being resurrected and setting sail. The curse that surrounds the Pirates who turn to skeletons in the moonlight is another factor that I wanted to explore.
The aim was to create a scene that was blissfully still and tranquil yet showing a much darker side to it through the canons firing and the detail within the foreground. It is a case of creating a truly open-ended piece because of details included and things happening out of shot that will hopefully fuel the imagination of the viewer as to what has happened to Captain Jack Sparrow. Has he met his fate? The skeletal hand that rises out of the water towards the necklace has his jewelled ring, a simple case of taking treasure or much worse, could Jack have turned?
One of Jack’s iconic quotes is ‘My Spirit Will Live On’ and I feel that it is perfect for this piece, as well as it visibly being a cool Pirate scene there is a deeper side for consideration - his silhouette forms part of the cliff looking out towards the ship and the sea, the spirit remains… -

Perfection Through The Eyes Of A Stork (Dumbo) - Hand Embellished Large Limited Edition #1/10

- My interpretation of the much loved Dumbo! The concept of this piece is to embrace the emotion that radiates from the lead character that interacts with another - so in this case it shows the unbreakable bond between the elephant and the stork that originally delivered the little man to his mother. The stork sees only perfection when looking at Dumbo, where others only see opportunities to exploit and to mock. The scene shows a forlorn Dumbo sat in a battered and ageing circus train carriage unwilling to come out, evidence of those that have contributed to his lack of confidence and self worth is all around him. A circus monkey stares at a crow holding a cigar (a reference to the original animated film) whilst a tiny mouse stares up towards Dumbo to try and get his attention whilst he is surrounded by other crows.
The contrast between dark and light, good and bad is played out through references such as the contrasting black and white feathers that are dotted around the carriage. The aim was to create a random but beautiful image that displays this connection and sense of pride yet one that still has a dark side that burns. Scrawled messages and a burning ringmaster’s whip that sits next to a piece of wood featuring the ‘greed breeds monsters’ message that I have used as an overriding concept in numerous pieces and points the finger at those that exploit for personal gain. Further evidence of the darkness is shown by the knives that protrude from the carriage wall, making you think whether the knife thrower is simply sharpening their act or has darker intentions. There are clear references to the story of Jumbo, the African elephant that inspired the film, sticky buns and cracking posters are a nod a non-fictional event that was full of controversy and uncertainty yet focused on a deep bond between two characters. -

A Letter To Aunt Lucy (Paddington) - Hand Embellished Large Limited Edition #5/10

- My interpretation of the wonderfully British Paddington Bear! What we see sadly is a heartbreaking image of the little bear down and out, sat in a stairwell looking lonely and lost, desperate for his Aunt Lucy. How could this now be his existence after being surrounded by so much love, intrigue and comfort?
All good things have to come to an end don’t they? Is this self-inflicted or caused by another? You’ll notice his upturned hat that has caught the generosity and pity of strangers on hearing Paddington play a little tune on his trumpet, a gift from Uncle Pastuzo. Is he trying to collect money for Marmalade or simply for the postage for his letter to Aunt? There are subtle details surrounding his case that remind you that he is just a boy, scrawled letters that pour light onto his troubles and frustration.
The lovely quality with this piece is that it is open-ended leaving you to decide on the reasons and also what is in that letter. As with my way of working there is always hope and in this case you can see this shining towards the little man from out of view, look a little harder and there is a subtle detail that might change things completely. My intention along with creating an authentic piece that fans of Paddington will love is to make you think, to consider who the person was and could / should be if given a helping hand towards recovery, one step at a time. -

Cash My Gold SUKKA! (The A-Team) - Large Limited Edition #5AP

- I’m sure I’m not alone with this one, but I bloody loved the A-Team as a kid! Classic Saturday TV memories with the family and I loved and lived every minute of every episode. I have previously created two A-team pieces; ‘Soldiers of Fortune’ was created back in 2016 and sold as an original piece whilst ‘A-Division’ was a commission. The van has featured within pieces such as ‘Petrolheads’ but I have been itching to create an image that can be available as a general release so here it is SUKKAS!
The two pieces previously captured the team’s love for creating intricate and bizarre weapons and vehicles from cabbages and egg boxes, whilst also referencing their previous roles in the US military and I love both pieces. For this image I wanted to do something different, so I planned to move the timeline forward to a period after the characters have moved on.
My favourite character was B.A Baracus, what a nutter! Apart from Pat Butcher, he was the only one capable of carrying off those whopping great big earrings! He was a unit, wasn’t he?! Probably from all that milk he drank, I guess if his hate for milk was like his fear of planes then all he would have been good enough was to play for the 'Owd Reds. Accrington Stanley, who are they? Exactly!
So, I tried to get inside Mr T’s head to see what he would probably do with all his free time and apart from becoming a boxer, (that wouldn’t work would it surely?) I thought he could continue with his love for all things gold and glittery and set up a gold mine out in the middle of nowhere where surely no one could find him, or could they?
A rickety, towering gold mine expands up from the desert that looks to be as sturdy as one of the old A-Team TV sets. Yet just look at the operation that is going on here under the name ‘FOOLS GOLD’ (you see what I did there?). Rail carts stand on their tracks full of gold, it looks like business has come to a grinding halt, is there a mole within the tumbleweed or just a jackal?
Although so much has been left for your interpretation, one thing is clear and that is B.A’s empire is under attack from above as wave after wave of attacks rain down from the sky. But hold on, the classic Corvette is being carried away by the military Chinook, is everyone on the same side here? Is he out on his own, did he cut his ties back then or has his comrades answered his call for one last battle? Blacked out windows leave everything open to your imagination.
A key component of the classic series was the constant over the top drama that played out, how many vehicles were flipped over and blown up by them lobbing sticks of dynamite at any opportunity? Yet did anyone ever not make it out of their flattened or burning jeep? I have paid homage to this by creating a cracking sense of drama and movement to contrast with the static objects laid out in front of you to decipher.
Bigger isn’t always better and that is shown with the role that the iconic A-Team van plays within the scene and its composition. It is such a bloody brilliant vehicle that looks great up close but I have done this within ‘Petrolheads’ and didn’t want to replicate this so, instead it is doing ‘doughnuts’ in the desert, but driven by who?
There have been a few calls to include a ‘big rig’ within a piece and I love what is happening here. I remember the time when they converted a rig to become a battering ram, it just looked immense. So, in true A-Team style I have got the virtual angle grinder and blow torch out and created my own. Look closely and you will spot whose truck this is! I love the end results, it has a ‘Mad Max’ quality to it, now there’s food for thought.
I avoided watching the big screen movie remake as I prefer to keep my memories unspoilt but always enjoy watching old episodes. With the exception of when Leeds used to come out onto the pitch to ‘Eye of the tiger’, I can’t think of many better intros than the theme tune to the A-Team. I only take on a subject if it resonates with me and if I feel that I can bring something different to the subject and most importantly do it justice and I can whole-heartedly say that I have thrown everything at it. It has brought so many special memories back to the surface.

EIVISSA - Large Limited Edition #5AP

- Ok, so for each of the previous ‘Retrospective’ collections there has been a music inspired piece as it has played a massive part in reinvigorating my memories of growing up through to present day. In 2019 I created ‘Mad For It’, a 90’s ‘Brit-pop’ celebration that focused upon the Manchester music scene. A slightly different type of music and weather to what you now see here in EIVISSA, but the two pieces are related, to me anyway! Basically, in my late teens I was really into house music, I absolutely loved it. So much so that I wasn’t bothered with the ‘Indie’ scene that most of my mates were. This resulted in me not going to watch the little gig that was ‘OASIS live at Knebworth, that was practically on my bloody doorstep. Damn it!
Typically, I soon started to move towards Indie, Brit-pop and an increasingly heavier taste and I seriously regret not going, I couldn’t even get any shared memories from my mates as they can’t remember anything from it! A side effect that the majority of those who were lucky enough to get over the ‘white isle’ in the hedonistic era of the 1980’s through to early 2000’s. Like I said, I loved and still love the House music from that period, but I never got to go over to Ibiza and ‘large it up’. I’ve never waved a glow stick or got off my nut on mind-blowing drugs. The closest I got was the nightclub in San Jaime – Menorca and waving one of the wooden statues about before getting bollocked and told to leave. Not hardcore but good fun.
As with a good number of my pieces, I like to take on subjects that typically get overlooked in the art sense yet have a massive following. I love creating scenes that put you right back there, that pulls at your heart strings and amplifies all the emotions that you felt at the time. With EIVISSA I have created a digital still life composition that is much ‘freer’ than the majority of my works, so it truly creates this sense of calm as you either watch the sun go down or come up from the beach. It is a beautiful image, pure tranquillity, with the sun shimmering over a sea that looks like a blanket of diamonds and the stunning Bougainvillea gently framing the vista. If you look closely, you will spot that the sun is actually made from a vinyl LP, whilst graphic equalizer patterns mimic hints of distant hills over the horizon as you look towards the other Balearic Islands.
There is a narrative and another purpose to EIVISSA, it depicts the changes that have happened out there from the early period when the clubs existed but were dotted about amongst little villages and dust tracks. A time when it was all about the music and the experience before the VIP culture took a hold that made everything so much harder and more expensive. Now, sadly it seems to be that the tables are reserved for those with the deepest pockets or biggest following. So, despite this being a positive piece, there is a nod to that. It isn’t something that I will pretend to be incensed by, but I felt it right to acknowledge, more so when the true spirits of Ibiza pass, such as Jose Padilla. ‘Heaven is a place of wonder’.
This sense of shifting sands is reinforced by the objects within the main composition. Dominated by a DJ mixing deck and with cracking objects that surround it, there is this feeling of things being uncovered and recovered that were previously hidden, just like how I hope this piece brings those memories back that were blurred and hazy. It is what ‘Retrospective’ stands and aims for, to look backwards to look forward. Look closely and you’ll spot an object that brings the time of this piece bang up to date rather than it being what many would initially think is set back in past decades. However, once you’ve spotted it, do you see it as current or set in the future when the restrictions are now a thing of the past and with that comes hope that the true spirit of EIVISSA has returned, floated in with the grace of a rainbow unicorn!
I have loved creating this piece, I really have. I hope that it has offered something that many didn’t think existed and that I have done justice to the memories that you lunatics can remember. Look closely at the mixing decks, it is totally transformed with cracking references with the odd one that needs a real clear head to decipher. I love the contrast between the wonderfully calm qualities but the drama and movement of the light trails that not only depict the intensity of the clubs but reinforce the sense that things are coming back to life. At the time of writing, it is Autumn and grey skies, but I hope that I have brought a brighter horizon to you and the time when you’ll be finally back on the sand is getting ever closer. I think we will all drink to that! Just beware of the dangers of Moist, Milky Donuts, Always!

Vendetta (The Godfather) - Large Limited Edition #4/20

- This is a piece that just makes you laugh when you stand back and look at what you’ve created. It is just so bloody cool, it had to be! The Godfather is so incredibly powerful, visually and conceptually so you can so easily miss the mark with it. I had previously created a ‘Corleone’ piece that was his side profile made from smoke which is one to seek out if you aren’t familiar with it. However, the past couple of ‘Lost in Hollywood’ collections have featured iconic gangster pieces so the time was right to create an intense scene piece for my collectors.
The end result is so different to what I thought it would be, originally it was going to be a gritty street scene where the Don was shot whilst shopping for oranges. Then it was going to be the toll booth scene but from watching the movie again with a fresh pair of eyes it was the intensity of his office that struck a chord with me and fuelled my imagination. Everything revolved around the office, where deals were made, vendettas planned and how you then see the actions come from it. It is such a dark room yet so rich is detail, warmth and innocence.
The office was built completely from scratch and that alone makes it an incredibly cool and rich image and didn’t need the central character, yet when he was introduced it took the piece to a completely different level. The power that resonates from him is insane! I’ve not tried to put a different narrative to this piece out of respect for the movie but instead I wanted to really test myself technically, after all that is what it is about as an artist - the want to improve and grow.
There are details within the scene that didn’t need to go in but that I wanted to do something that was incredibly challenging. Look at the fish tank! In the movie it is tiny and subtle, yet hearing the line ‘sleep with the fishes’ and how sinister that is, gave me a thought of giving it much more presence. From that you see the semi-transparent view through to where the Don is sitting, it all turned out so well and gives me that ‘puff your bloody chest out’ feeling.
Other subtle details that may be random but the technical aspect is right up there. For example the blood orange that is literally spilling blood or Don Corleone’s face merged into the markings on the ill-fated horses head. There is so much in there to spot, it is a pure celebration of an incredible movie. It is so dark, so bloody toxic yet coupled with this beautiful lighting that radiates inwards through the iconic shutters.
A detail that appealed was how he was being betrayed from within and this is depicted by the desk that smoulders and the thorns that twist through the floor and the wood. I love how oranges symbolise imminent death and I have amplified that through the orange tree that has grown through the foundations as the wolves start to circle. There is so much in this piece that the die-hard fans of the movie will love seeking out and interpreting and I hope I have made you a piece that you can’t refuse! Take the piece, leave the Cannoli! -

Who You Gonna Call Now? (Ghostbusters) - Standard Limited Edition #39/45

- I absolutely loved this film as a kid and still do, it is such a great film! For this piece I have tried to not try and go too conceptual, instead just set a scene that people can easily associate to the film and characters.
Basically we see the Ghostbusters HQ at the point where the business is done for and they’ve stopped trying to help the city that they love. As with the film, the good that they they were trying to do was a battle against those who didn’t believe, who wanted to shut them down so it has reached the point where enough is enough and they’ve caught their last ghost. They put their lives on the line from the start and this is the result, their attitude has turned to hate towards those who have brought them to this point so they are ready to undo all the good work that they’ve done, basically bollocks to NYC, have your ghosts back, deal with it yourselves, we’re out.
So my piece shows the impact of that, showing key objects from their work littered about the building in a state of neglect, the wonderfully iconic ECTO 1 sits partly obscured behind a wall, done this way to look almost insignificant despite it’s stature. Computers sit smashed, filing cabinets with drawers flung open, hints of a quick departure are there through the subtle signs of a welders torch left on, just enough time to open the trap and unleash the ghosts back into the city.
The ghosts themselves are represented by beautifully lit details that interact with key elements within the scene, in complete contrast to the evil that lurks from within the basement and that is spilling outwards up the stairs. I always remember the vivid colours from the Proton Packs and the ghosts so I wanted to embrace that through use of these colours throughout the piece that contrast against the sombre mood of the scene itself. The walls show feint signs of faded murals that add to the history and intrigue of the building, and the light spilling into the room as with other pieces represents hope and the possibility that maybe all is not lost.
For me the piece is a different yet clearly recognisable take on an absolute classic film that embraces the fact that the featured ghosts weren’t actually that scary, apart from the odd one, or two!

I’ll Be There for You (Friends) - Standard Limited Edition #37/45

- HOW YOU DOIN?! Ok, that’s out of the way so onto the narrative! As with a good number of the pieces that feature in ‘Retrospective 2’ ‘Friends’ was a subject that I have been asked if I would take on and I am so glad I finally have. It is always a matter of timing; a cracking piece can risk falling flat if it is released at the wrong time. This collection was planned in 2019, just as 2021 is being discussed now and despite 2020 becoming a year that is hopefully like no other it actually transpired to give this piece a whole new level of poignancy.
The scene is set within the charming ‘Central Perk’ and focuses on the iconic sofa that so many moments were filmed on. The coffee shop is full to bursting with detail yet totally empty of people, literally everyone looks to have upped and skedaddled. So, you could look at it as being down to Phoebe’s atrocious singing or Marcel maybe dropping his guts or maybe something a little different. Your piece, your call. The reason ‘I’ll Be There For You’ has taken on such a different quality is down to the fact that whilst I was creating it lockdown happened, again. Restrictions on friends and family meeting up indoors, coffee shops and other places where we loved to meet up were and still largely are all shut. So, this scene really does serve as a reminder just how wonderful it is to be free to meet with those who raise your spirits and how moments need to be cherished and embraced.
‘I’ll Be There For You’ is the first piece to feature in a new wider ‘panoramic’ format to help me squeeze in even more detail and the end result once you see it fully framed really is something special. It’s big, not ‘sofa big’ so hopefully there will be no need to… ‘PIVOT!’ There is a ridiculous amount of detail to spot! Iconic objects and moments are interpreted in my own random way, I have hidden really subtle details and my lips are well and truly sealed on those as I hope that once friends and family are able to meet that they’ll maybe spot something that you missed and so the conversation starts and memories build.
The funny thing is that ‘Friends’ used to be on non-stop years back in my house and I bloody hated it! Well, I think I did, but the reality was it was just during a period of huge stress and I couldn’t handle it. The canned laughter, the over the top one liners, I flipping despised Monica, there you go, I said it! Yet now, looking back I asked myself did I actually really hate it? Probably not. The reason I now know, is that ‘Friends’ is back on as a near permanent feature whilst feeding our faces and I really enjoy it. Monica still winds me up, but I love it. The reason for this was highlighted last night actually and personified so much of what I had hoped to be able to do.
A fundamental part of my decision to become an independent artist was to be able to spend much more time with my daughter, Olivia who was about to turn thirteen. All I did was work to survive and I barely had any time (or admittedly head space) for her. Bad eh but true.
Two years or so on and what a difference! Ok so I probably under-estimated the teenager desire to head to her room at any chance, but things are so different, my day is different, my mindset is different. Yes, the darkness is there and probably even darker, but I’m turned towards the light for sure. Last night was great, rather than heading straight back to her room Olivia stayed down and we watched a good couple of hours of episodes, and it was great, something that should be so normal but when normal was anything but normal this was just lovely. Maybe it was partially down to her seeing that I was enjoying the TV rather than feeling guilty of it being on that kept her sat for longer, but I guess it just shows how your mindset can have such an impact on people around you.
