The Memory Remains 2 - Standard Limited Edition
- Nothing like a bit of pressure with this one! Without doubt the most requested and anticipated sequel to one of my earlier works so even though I always knew what I would do it certainly added something to the process! In fact, it almost didn’t happen, oh how we laugh seeing someone drive off with their fuel cap on their roof from a petrol station. What about leaving your studio in pitch blackness with your laptop on the roof before getting home and realising you left it in the studio but then approach a bend in the road to see what is blatantly your laptop smashed to bits after being run over by what looked like a monster truck.
The piece was about 80% done and saved ‘locally’ and due to go to print in two days’ time, oh how I wept like a baby. Blubbering and crapping myself aside I luckily was saved by ‘iCloud’ and was able to finish it to what you now see today. There’s a story for the Grandkids right there.
‘The Memory Remains’ focused on an intriguing, classic toy shop – a million miles away from how we shop for our kids nowadays. So, what we see in the follow up is inside the toy shop, a nostalgic feast of pretty much every toy that you can think back to owning or wanting to own. The room is full to bursting with classic games, toys and sweets in the hope that I have created the ultimate shrine to our childhood playtime. This is without doubt the most labour-intensive piece that I have created to date, with in excess of one hundred hours going into the scene. There are subtle qualities that link visually with the first piece in terms of composition and I am keen to see if you spot them.
I am always keen for my pieces to link together and this is done here by some of the toys and teddies being referenced in the toy shop that are also shown in my 2019 ‘Skool’s Out’ piece where the Summer holidays are in full swing (can’t help myself with the puns). This shows that everything revolves around the toy shop that you see here now, there was none of this shopping around or click and collecting – it was that trip in with you family or friends to the toy shop in town and you loved and lived every minute of it.
So, for everyone who owns the first piece or missed out but hoped for a great follow up I genuinely hope that you love what you see and that I have done justice to your memories. I have loved every single minute of creating this piece (with the exception of paragraph 1!) and on a personal level it has reinforced what a cracking childhood I enjoyed and without doubt those memories burn more vividly than before, the best memories will always remain.

The Memory Remains 4 - Canvas Limited Edition
- Ok, so before I waffle on, I want to say a special thank you to the commissioning client of the very first ‘The Memory Remains’ that I created way, way back! I won’t mention his name, but he knows who he is and what a brilliant collaborative effort that was and look at the results! I remember being told that releasing the image as a print wouldn’t work, well no more words needed on that one, they say a picture speaks a thousand words.
I am a storyteller; I create visual chapters. Sometimes I conceive an ending, sometimes I leave it open to be continued. Occasionally, when immersed in a particular chapter, you can see an alternative direction which leads to a different ending. Yet, with ‘The Memory Remains’ there was always only one journey with it as a series, excluding ad-hoc special editions or pieces inspired by it.
The first piece crammed so much within a small window, literally. Stood looking across the road you could see the central toy shop with its’ enticing window display, whilst also getting a glimpse at part of a local cinema and an arcade that had recently closed down. I’m not sure if people spotted that and thought of it as a defining point to the piece. What it does it throw things completely as it changes the date from the era that it celebrates to being much more current. The sad reality of the closures of local independents is what is there but you look past that to what you remember when you were younger.
So, effectively you are doing exactly what my ‘Retrospective’ works epitomise, which is looking past the ‘real’ and towards the past and through the power of imagination and that child-like mindset, what you see is something that is so much bigger, brighter and better than it was. Hold onto that, as it is important when explaining each of the pieces within the series.
The first door that you were taken through in ‘The Memory Remains 2’ was the toy shop, and what a shop that turned out to be! How can so many toys be crammed into such a tiny shop frontage? See? So many of the toys from that scene feature within other pieces as I have continued to retell my youth through pictures (and so many of yours given by the reaction!) Everything links, it’s a walk-through of our memories, lovely, eh? ‘
The Memory Remains 3’ took you into an incredible cinema foyer to watch whatever film you choose to remember. Were those characters really there? Was your mind still in overdrive after the Pick N Mix, surely, they weren’t just the point of sale cardboard cut outs. There is such a wonderful link to my ‘Lost in Hollywood’ works with this piece and further reinforcement to the above where every memory is real and related.
So, there was one last door to go through, well before the shutters closed for the last time. The arcade! As the Gok would say, ‘it’s all about the confidence’ and truth be told, as a kid I had very little. So, I would always shy away from stepping up to the arcade machines, instead preferring to watch friends hammer them.
Confidence turns to comfort in another memory of growing up, this time during my time on a middle school French exchange trip when staying with a brilliant guy, who I still speak with today, Salut Cedric! I was incredibly home sick, I won’t lie. I pretended to have a cold to explain the streaming eyes! LOL buddy! Anyway, basically as well as playing table tennis, it was watching Cedric and his friend smashing it at ‘Sonic’ that has always stuck with me as it provided a real sense of comfort and common ground, even though I was shit at it and oblivious to any French insults being hurled about.
‘The Memory Remains 4’ is a true celebration of the wonders of retro gaming and the vibrancy of the arcades. Again, everything is shown to be bigger, brighter and a level up. What we see is a glimpse outside of the building and into Sonics’ world. I have wanted to replicate that iconic game play for so long and I love the end results. There have been so many interpretations of Sonic in the art scene, and each have their own merit, well this is mine and it’s authentic. Like Frank said, I did it my waaaaay.
So, whether you have bought part of this series, or this completes your full collection I want to say a massive thank you to each and every bloody one of you because it has been an absolute fucking blast! All great things come to an end, but the memories will always remain.

Up For The Cup - Standard Limited Edition

- The prerequisite for this collection was to embrace looking back to help look forward and I spent a good amount of time really thinking what memories stuck from my childhood that so many would find a connection with, as opposed to pure self-indulgence. Football has always dominated my childhood and I’ve never lost the love for the beautiful game.
I have so many vivid memories as a kid being taken to football matches by my Dad, Michael, be it Saturdays at Luton Town or long trips up to Elland Road. Yet it was the real treat when you were taken to Wembley to watch an England game, it was always about how you felt seeing those famous towers and all of the football coaches parked up that I remember more than the game itself. Coming home with a flag or sweatbands that you would cherish long after the game.
I’ve only been to the new Wembley once (all part of being a Leeds fan!) and whilst it is a magnificent arena it is nothing in comparison to the stature of seeing those towers appear. So that was the aim for this piece, to create a scene where the stadium loomed up suddenly between buildings with a real sense of magnificence. Nostalgia personified.
What we see took an absolute age as I wanted to create a perfect scenario within the London street scene. I wanted to feature an iconic green tiled boozer and a proper old-school high street shop that we can all relate to. I saw the opportunity to link nicely in with the format of ‘The Memory Remains’ and I am really pleased with how it has turned out!
The piece is actually celebrating the World Cup win of 1966 with so much of the details paying homage to the Ramsey boys who lifted the ‘Jules Rimet’, there are some really subtle but beautiful details for you to seek out. However, the more you look you realise that the scene is actually set in the late 80’s, references to ‘Live Aid’ and the Queen sell out Wembley concert all help to build the story.
Those who follow my work closely will know that I love to inject a multi-layered narrative where possible and this is the case with this piece. ‘Greavsies Rentals’ is a quirky TV rental shop like so many of us can remember. This detail in itself provided a really great quality to the scene but right from the start I had wanted to feature a reference to the wheeler and dealer Del Boy.
I had originally intended to just have his three wheeler parked up in the side street but the more personality that grew from the rentals shop and the questionable quality of the goods I chose to showcase the source of the TV’s by insinuating that it was actually Mr Trotter himself that was supplying Greavsie! It is just a wonderful bit of randomness that I feel takes this piece away from simply being able to be embraced by football fans. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did creating it.

Ok, so for those who have followed my work closely for years, you will know that music plays a prominent and inspiring role in both my art and my life. It fuels both the fire and the fun behind the meaning of my work, driving the narrative and helping to keep me in that particular mindset that helps me to stay focused and create a truly authentic piece.
Not wanting to toot my trumpet, I would say that I have a crackingly (is that even a word) diverse taste in music, from the hauntingly beautiful Ólafur Arnalds through to the ballistic chaos of Slipknot. However, it didn’t start that well looking back at my earlier choices! I’m man enough to admit that my first vinyl single was Andy Stewart’s ‘Donald Where’s Your Troosers’. Please tell me I’m not alone on this one! I’ve just put it on now and I genuinely have no idea what I was thinking, it’s woeful! How do I follow that up? Ok, so my first vinyl LP album that I bought? ‘Soul Provider’ by Michael ‘the hair’ Bolton. I was a shy little beast back then. I must have had Georgia on my mind from those smoky school discos! Donald has had his pants pulled down but the soulful, sepia toned crooner is staying on, after all, how am I supposed to live without you?!
I have really gone for it of late, conceiving and delivering innovative and engaging new formats to showcase my work that transforms the artwork and nostalgia that radiates from it. ‘Retrospective 4’ sees the release of my playing card edition which looks superb, but I had to ensure that the collection retained the WOW factor, so that’s what I’ve done!
My ‘Retrospective’ body of work is all about looking back to look forward, pausing to rewind and play, as a break from a life set to fast forward. It has always been striving to inject those details and references that create so much happiness from that point where you remember a moment or detail that was so special but was pushed right to the far corner of your memory bank. It’s always been about memories; the best will always remain and burn brightest.
So, combining all of what I’ve just waffled on about, I am so bloody excited to unveil my debut into the music industry, well sort of! My debut album is out now, available on both cassette and vinyl LP, albeit in art form only for both legal and your sanity, mainly legal though! Taking inspiration from the music compilation albums that were a firm favourite at Christmas time, both from Santa and a ‘go to’ choice at vol-au-vent fuelled family gatherings, ‘Retrospective 4’ sees the launch of the first instalment of ‘WOW That’s What I F*cking Call Memories!’ Clever eh! You see what I did there? There is so much potential here and the end results for both the canvases and the editions are so authentic, fun and engaging, they need to be seen to be truly enjoyed!
The cassette format features a retro style cassette case with my artwork printed and hand detailed to look aged and well used, complete with a crumpled sticker offering a little guidance. Beneath this is a quirky cassette that is unravelling before your eyes, showing that the request has been well and truly ignored. I’m sure I’m not alone in being guilty of ruining many a tape when trying to record the Top 40 on a Sunday or typically when borrowing a friend’s cherished album.

The vinyl LP format just works brilliantly, I’m buzzing for it and it’s potential. This is how I saw my much earlier ‘Remastered’ collection being done, so having the freedom and ability to go full on with the production side of things has taken this format to a level that is so authentic and nostalgic. My artwork has been professionally printed by a specialist within the music industry and is beautifully presented, float mounted against a heavily painted backboard. It’s unique, very different and protected so you can’t scratch it! I hope you love this, the attention to detail will leave your head spinning!
