- This piece ‘Unrequited’ is inspired by the much loved Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen and complements the ‘Little Wing’ piece that was created at the same period. I have created pockets of drama through brushstrokes and textures and vivid colour along with beautiful light.
Hundreds of tiny hearts come together to form the mermaid and contrast with the abstract markings that represent the rock that she sits on. For me it is how she just sits calmly, looking out to see, waiting with hope. The colours of the hearts that make up her upper body depict that emotion and love that she holds for the Prince. The composition is based on the beautiful sculpture that sits at Copenhagen’s harbour.
There is beauty and hope blended with darkness and frustration to depict her love that she has for the Prince and it going unnoticed that leads to sadness, heartbreak and a waste of life. -
