'Trouble's Coming!' (Ghostbusters) - Standard Limited Edition
-
Back in 2016 when I first started out creating my very first ‘Lost in Hollywood’ collection, it was a ‘Ghostbusters’ inspired piece entitled ‘Who You Gonna Call Now?’ that was the starting point. I have always loved the two movies (more the first one) and have such strong memories of the toys as well, that nostalgic feeling you get when you take yourself back to getting a new toy and how immersed you were as a child playing with it! The 80’s was such an amazing decade to be a kid!
If you look at ‘Who You Gonna Call Now? ‘and also, my first ‘Back to the Future’ inspired piece ‘OUTATIME’, you will see how subtle they are in comparison to much more recent pieces. For example, you didn’t see a character from the movie and the cars were only partially in view. This was because of having previously been known for my ‘Storyteller’ series where classic fairy tales were retold using the detail rather than anything too obvious. I love how these two pieces proved so popular and am incredibly proud of them. Within this 2026 collection, there is a piece ‘Never Grow Old. Never Die’ that is based on ‘The Lost Boys’ movie and that has been created in the same way of working, subtle, more ‘Storyteller’.However, as the years passed and I my ‘Lost in Hollywood’ portfolio continued to grow, it naturally evolved. I guess it was through a combination of becoming more and more connected and in love with each movie, whilst feeding of the excitement of my collectors, that started to make each piece so much more dramatic through the introduction of characters within the scenes, whilst also showing the movie vehicles in their full glory! If you know my work, then you’ll know that I will shoehorn a car into a piece at any opportunity!
So, ten years later, I thought it was time to showcase the iconic ‘ECTO 1’ in its entirety and make it all about the car. I have always loved the converted hearse, is there a better noise to when the sirens crank up?! I remember being sat in a diner in New York a few years back and just randomly watching a brilliant replica just cruise down the backstreet as if it was the norm, it really made you feel that you could have been living in that world that we got an insight into through the movie, so cool!
I had always had this idea to show the car all bashed up and under an old tarpaulin in a dusty old van, ready to go out one more time and save the city, it was always planned. Then I saw the movie trailer for ‘Afterlife’ and it was there, I couldn’t believe it! So not wanting to look like I was taking someone’s idea, I parked that for a while. To mark the decade of my ‘Lost in Hollywood’ collection, I felt there was no better time to finally bring my idea to life, and here it is, in the shape of ‘Trouble’s Coming!’
Set in front of a creepy deteriorating barn that is the home to ‘STANZ Auto Salvage’ and away from any trouble that the city could possibly bring, or in this case, not! Working in complete isolation for years has quickly changed and with it comes some spooky characters that have taken residency within the barn, can you spot them all? The barn itself brings such a presence to this piece, I love how it dominates, almost demon-like, the darkness against the dramatic sky is so powerful that I knew before any of the cars or details went in that this piece was going to be epic!
Then we move onto the car itself, how good does it look in this format! Side on and with this detail covering it, I never like to mess around too much with such iconic vehicles, instead favouring subtle details that relate to the story that I am telling. I love how by showing the car as a hearse before the transformation, it really shows how something can be repurposed in such a dramatic way. One of my favourite details within this scene is subtle, it’s the set of red candles that are laid out in the shape of the ‘Ghostbusters’ logo, what is your favourite detail?
‘Trouble’s Coming’ has given me so much happiness whilst working on the image and then seeing it go through production ahead of it’s release. I am so excited to see the reaction to this latest spooky instalment, it’s relentless here in the studio but moments like this give me a little reminder as to how far I have come as a full-time artist. Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way!
