- Let the madness unfold with my brand-new Gremlins inspired piece ‘There’s Trouble A-Brewin!’. Judging from the sales to date for my previous artwork ‘Midnight at the Mall’, I am not alone with my love for all things Gremlins! It is without a doubt one of those childhood movies that still burns brightly and another that you could create so many different scenes.
If you are long-term followers of my work and a movie buff then you might have spotted a key detail that may have confused you slightly. ‘Is that the clock tower from Back to the Future?!’Hell yeah! I haven’t lost the plot and if you look closely back at ‘Midnight at the Mall’ you will spot it again through the department store glass! Just to explain for those who don’t already know, both movies were filmed on the same set and the illustration of Kingston Falls clearly shows the building, when you see it, you can’t not notice! After all, it is so iconic! However, before I started all this messing around with movies malarkey, I had no idea that the two films were linked so don’t worry if you didn’t know either. Two of my favourite movies coming together is something that I had to embrace!
So, with this new piece, I have played along to this multi-use quality and taken the set from a past ‘Back to the Future’ piece ‘OUTAREACH’ and reworked it in my unique way. The clock tower is now a stunning movie theatre that draws you (and the odd Prince) in, the lake has frozen over and created the perfect platform for absolute mayhem to play out! These details came to me later on in the planning stage as the envisaged composition was going to simply show the theatre in the same way as another older piece ‘Spielberg’s Hollywood’ but I am so pleased that this new route offers much more.
One key detail that I had in my mind from the start was to show Gizmo’s Barbie pink Corvette but in real size rather than the toy car. I thought it would look great simply parked up out front as if it were nothing out of the ordinary. However, by going down this new direction it allowed me to create something so much more fun, and random! Look closely and ‘Spike’ has begun cutting around the car with his chainsaw to send Gizmo’s ride down to the bottom of the lake. I love how my mind works when consumed in creating art and it seems you lot do too! Thank you.
I have mentioned before how I enjoy and encourage the interaction with those that follow and collect my work and I loved seeing the responses when I asked what movies would be welcome this year. Gremlins was one and the cinema being the scene of choice. Great shout! Absolute chaos! What attracted me to this moment from the film wasn’t just the craziness that played out but it was the film that was showing on the big screen – ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’! If you know my work then you will know that my ‘Storyteller’ collections often feature ‘Snow White’ albeit in a much, much darker way, so the option of integrating both storybooks and movies into a piece was of real interest to me.
My ‘Storyteller’ works make a point of avoiding showing the characters in favour of you seeking out the clues to decipher what is happening in each scene. In this instance, and because it is ultimately a movie driven piece, I have gone full on with including them, yet what I love is the contrast between the two-dimensional feel of the animation compared to the Gremlins themselves. I did stop short of including human characters from the Gremlins movie as that would have been too much. It is the role of the ‘Snow White’ movie that allowed for such a fitting title for this piece.
‘There’s Trouble A-Brewin!’ took an age and even at the point where I initially thought I was finished, I continued to introduce even more Gremlins that made the scene so much better and chaotic! I am hopeful that you can see my love for this movie shine through and for those who love the film and the randomness then I am pretty confident that this piece will keep you entertained way past midnight!
