‘That’s How Winning is Done’ (Rocky) - Standard Limited Edition
-
When I first released ‘Lost in Hollywood’ back in 2016, it featured a powerful and uplifting piece entitled ‘Balboa’. Inspired by the iconic boxer with his fist raised to the sky, this image was created in an abstract style that involves a vast number of intricate layers made up of smoke-like strokes that come together to create a human form. When you combine this with flashes of light that interact with the shapes, it starts to become fluid and begins to move. It is a very different way of working compared to my highly detailed scene artworks and has led to a powerful set of artworks that have embraced this style.
‘Balboa’ kick-started a gritty suite of artworks inspired by the ‘Rocky’ movies and they have always been so well received by my collectors. What I love is how these pieces have been taken up equally for what they represent rather than just by fans of the films. It is that ‘never give up’ mentality that resonates with so many and my latest offering embodies that message beautifully. ‘That’s How Winning is Done’ has been created through my inspiration of my brother, Chris, who is the strongest guy I know, someone who continues to take life’s punches, the greatest fighter and who remains undefeated.
This piece features the full body, in situ, one that has risen off the ground in pure defiance and celebration for winning through. The colourways are softer compared to the bold palette of ‘Balboa’. This was to embrace the beautifully positive narrative that drives this image and that connects with so many. The lighting is dramatic and warm, interacting with the figure in view. What you see in this image is so much greater than simply a depiction of a moment within the movie.
I know why I have created this piece of art, and you know why it resonates with yourself. I hope that this image fires you up to keep on fighting if needed or to acknowledge the fight that has already been won. Even if the battle feels like it’s been lost, when that person has given everything then it is impossible not to be a winner. That level of fight can’t be bought; it is already within. Every champion was a contender that refused to give up.
