- I have mentioned before how I enjoy and encourage the interaction with those that follow and collect my work and I loved seeing the responses when I asked what movies would be welcome this year. Labyrinth was another film that was requested and it got me thinking how I could deliver that. ‘Lost in Hollywood 2’ in 2019 saw me release ‘You Have No Power Over Me’ which was a truly beautiful and enchanting ballroom scene that has proven so popular and often purchased for the fact that the image itself was so wonderful without even knowing that it was based on Labyrinth. I love that!
This movie is so surreal, light and dark in abundance and is perfect for me to showcase my way of thinking, I could create so many different pieces just from the movie and its narrative. What you see with ‘My Kingdom is Great’ is that blend of my ‘Storyteller’ works and the more obvious ‘Lost in Hollywood’ approach. The forest scene is absolutely stunning with the most beautiful lighting that shines through, it was the perfect backdrop to then introduce the cherished characters from the movie.
The plan for this piece was to approach the composition in similar ways to ‘Fight or Flight’ and ‘Lithium’ that showed the lead character from behind, where you can’t see their face, which allows for the audience to find a strong affiliation with the figure. If you look at the aforementioned pieces you will see that the woman is being watched by a solitary deer that is guiding her on her journey. That detail exists beautifully in this scene, and is actually born from an incredibly powerful and surreal moment from years back whilst working in the studio amongst some truly awful trauma in my personal life. I was charging around as I do here and walked out of the back door to be met with a majestic white stag that was stood on the driveway just watching. That connection seemed to last an age before it ran off down the drive and across the road, into the field before disappearing into the woodland. It created such an effect on me and has been depicted in my works since.
However, there is more than one that is vying for the girl’s attention. The ‘Goblin King’ is shown as the owl from the movie that is perched across from Sarah. It is the battle between good and evil that plays out silently here, which way will she turn? Strength in numbers is represented through including her new found friends, Hoggle, Ludo, Didymus and Ambrosius. Now this was a dilemma, the image worked so wonderfully when it was just Sarah, Jareth and the deer, albeit with a solitary wolf stood watching. Yet ultimately the movie showed good winning out, so I wanted to keep to that message and by introducing her friends it reinforced the impact of being surrounded by people that can and will make a difference to your decision-making and happiness.
In addition to this sentiment, I knew that those fans of the movie would more than likely hope to see these bizarrely beautiful characters. I could have added more but it would have been at the risk of diluting the impact of the message. Watching Labyrinth always reminds me of Christmas and family time, not a bad thing eh. I have loved working on this piece, it shows how I have evolved as an artist since the early years through pushing myself as well as the personal experiences that have shaped my mindset and my work. Through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered, I have fought my way here.
