Petrolheads 007 - Standard Limited Edition

- As I write this, the completed original piece sits to my right, sparkling in the studio lights on what is a real ‘pea soup’ of an Autumn Day. I am so proud and excited about this piece. It isn’t just the final image, but more the process of how it came to be that I love. I like to engage with people to get their thoughts on possible pieces, often laying about in the studio over a tea and way too many bloody custard creams and I remember the idea for how to follow up on the first two Petrolheads pieces. Feedback and interaction are so important, naturally you must go with your gut feeling but I pride myself on keeping my ego locked away and listening to people that can make a difference and have passion in my work.
Back in 2018 when the first ‘Petrolheads’ was released, I had no idea that the reaction would be that strong. I loved the image and knew that it looked superb, but it was simply one from my ‘A New Chapter’ release. Yet, now it is without doubt the most enquired about piece and has sold out in every possible form. 2020 saw the follow up be released and has gotten a cracking reaction, I love the energy and drama on that piece as a contrast to its’ predecessor. ‘PH2’ followed on perfectly as it told the story about what happened when the film had finished, and they still had gas in the tank. There are more chapters to write on that group of cars, all in good time!
However, I wanted to do something different this time around. The idea was born from discussing possible James Bond pieces back in 2020 when I was brainstorming for what is now ‘Q Division’. The idea of having a stunning backdrop like Monte Carlo behind a selection of iconic Bond vehicles really excited me but I knew that it had more of a ‘Petrolheads’ quality to it, so that was parked (excuse the pun). I have held it back and back until the timing was right and what we see now is the culmination of so much planning and hours in the studio. So, what do you think?!
There aren’t many more spectacular backdrops than the Casino in Monte Carlo, if there are then feel free to suggest them and I will take the credit for any future piece! Joking aside, I love the splendour and intrigue of the building and with the beautiful tones of the fading light it comes to life, as do the cars! Good and evil are parked up side by side, a nod to how close darkness and light reside with each other.
For obvious reasons, Casino Royale is the base for this piece but it, like ‘Q-Division’ and the more recent ‘Underwater Love’ was created to celebrate the end of Daniel Craigs’ time as Bond, slightly delayed due to Covid but we got there eventually! As a kid watching the earlier Bond films it was always the cars and gadgets that excited me, Ok and maybe the Bond girls! There are so many of the classic vehicles that we all love, apologies if your favourite is missing but anymore and it risked looking like grid lock on the M25!
There is so much detail that surrounds the two cars in the foreground, details that hint at unrest and dark forces at work. It’s funny actually, as the iconic Lotus that went underwater was originally surrounded by a pool of water to link to its other use but with how my mind works it all went a bit dark after ‘Oddjobs’ hat pierced the car (that used to freak me out as a kid). Can you smell Petrol?
If you love the first ‘Petrolheads’ piece, then this 007 edition should get your engine revving as there is a sense of calm and mystery to the composition. What I love is there is a ‘Storyteller’ quality to the scene, a stunning building that clearly has so much going on within, yet we can’t see from looking. Yet, open your mind and your imagination and you’re up the stairs and through the doors.

The end result was a sold-out piece in all formats and the most requested piece to date. The aim was to leave a lot open to interpretation through not seeing the drivers but creating a scene that showed movement and interaction albeit out of shot. I wanted to convey a sense of belonging and affiliation through the Petrolheads club and in that instance it was a gathering in front of a drive in movie screen. Known for my art of storytelling I set off with the view that this would evolve into a series of pieces that plays out their journey. There is so much potential here through my love for movies and cars but not to the point where it mirrors the ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise – I think we are up to film number 9?! The overriding concept for Petrolheads 2 is a continuation of where we left of with Petrolheads, the cars and their drivers have watched the movie and aren’t done yet, they still have gas in the tank. So, where do they go where there are no limits? To an abandoned raceway set in the desert beneath the backdrop of the stunning Nevada mountains. Everything that made the first piece so successful has been amplified, the colours are more dramatic, the composition also, there are more cars, more magic, more detail, more things to seek out. The desert sun is starting to come up as the cars thrash around the circuit towards you, pedal to the metal, full throttle! All the favourites are there, some slower than others but they have been joined by many, many more. They are in it for the sheer love of it regardless of the number of horses that they are pulling. Who will take the chequered flag and who could be holding it? That’s for you to decide.

I do love my cars! When ‘Petrolheads’ was first released back in 2018, I had no idea that it would quickly become so popular, but I am so bloody happy that it is so well loved. It was a piece that I had wanted to do for years, it was all about timing and conceiving a scenario that could be the most engaging and ultimately successful, to create the ultimate movie car piece, no holds barred! From the reaction since, I think I achieved that!
At the point of planning there were so many iconic vehicles that could have gone in with equal success, even with being selective. I wanted this piece to hit you right between the eyes, to stimulate your senses and therefore I had to find the balance between being a visual feast and being too cluttered where the impact was compromised.
As with the majority of my work you don’t get to see the lead characters, it is the setting and the detail that tells the story and with this piece it opens up the question - who are driving these machines? Could it be all the movie characters have met up within the desert to watch a cracking car movie, hanging out around the fire, eating corn dogs, listening to Guns & Roses and a dirty V8? Or is it simply a group of enthusiasts doing just that? Over to you.
A lot has happened since the print edition was first released, there has been a sequel and a James Bond edition to add to collectors’ walls. In addition to creating nostalgic driven (excuse the pun) art, I have really focused on delivering exciting and engaging new formats to showcase my work. One of those has been the incredibly popular and versatile VHS edition. It has been so successful because of its uniqueness, it’s compact size and the level of hand embellishing that all come together to create something truly special to display in a tight space or as part of a number of them together.
So, given the fact that the very reason for so many of these iconic movie cars and their characters to have gathered deep within the desert was to watch a film on the big screen, it just made perfect sense to turn it into a movie, of sorts! So late into 2022, ‘Petrolheads the Movie’ gets its big release on the small screen! As well as a cracking image, the level of detail to enjoy is superb, it’s the small touches that come together to give it a real aged quality, frayed edges, a scratched and scuffed VHS cover, a crumpled sticker from the video rental shop that seems to have been defaced! So grab a Coors and a corn dog and prepare to blow a gasket at Petrolheads the Movie!

Pie Crust Promises (Mary Poppins) - Canvas Limited Edition

- My concept here picks up on the Pie Crust promise line that the children use in the story and the inclusion of the carousel horses along with the negative view towards this that was mentioned in the narrative. The original story gives the impression that Mr Banks doesn’t spend too much time with or have too much time for his children whilst his mother is focused on the Suffragettes movement. This means that Mary Poppins takes on the role of their primary carer.
What I have then done is to twist things so that we introduce a gambling addiction for Mr Banks (horses) and the negative impact of this is played out within the nursery. A carousel type horse smashes into the wood floor and dominates the scene, not only does this link to the story where they become detached from the fair ride and bounce all over the bloody place but it adds drama and signifies the impact that this addiction now makes on the family. The horse is actually real yet has been retouched to look like it is not, with cracks forming. This represents how something that started out as playful and fun evolved and grew into something very real and quite dark.
The mothers dedication to the Suffragettes movement is referenced by the white sash that has a line from her song ‘cast off the shackles of yesterday’ - this was chosen as it acts as a call to action to Mr Banks to seek to stop the gambling and cast away his demons from his past. I have then chosen to show the childrens’ frustration towards the family set up by them turning on their Nanny and being vocal (through wall scribbles) that they don’t see or want Mary Poppins as part of their family, they want their parents back. Mary is shown in a good light here, offering guidance through a scrawl on the wall ‘A stitch in time saves nine’ which means if you sort out a problem immediately it may save extra work later.
Ultimately the piece takes small references from the story and manipulates them to depict the negative impact an addiction (gambling and a passion) can have on a young family where the children ultimately lose out. Both parents are aware of the issues but are simply papering over the cracks. The references are subtle and through the darkness within the piece there is ultimately hope, for change.

Policemen & Pirates (Peter Pan) - Large Limited Edition
- This piece explores the synergies between Peter Pan and Michael Jackson and is set within an abandoned Neverland Ranch. An imposing and condemned pirate ship, rusting bus and rollercoaster stand still, surrounded by signs of happier times where childhood innocence was king.
I wanted to show a clear link to Peter Pan and Michael Jackson as it clearly existed whilst he was alive and also plays on the darkness of the original story and the controversy surrounding Jacko. The title itself has a childlike game quality to it like cops and robbers etc which works with the subject matter and mentality.
For me, the dominant fairground ride had to be a pirate ship as I have fond memories as a child from holidays to Belgium (the birth place of my Mother). We would always visit the ‘Meli’ theme park in De Panne and it was the first thing you would see when through the gates, I always remember the loud whoosh of the boat gainst the little tyre and the lights that ran up each side.
The pirate ship and supporting structure was constructed from scratch, using textures and random objects that I saw potential to transform i.e. swimming pool steps for the harnesses on the boat. The green lights represent Peter Pan whilst the blue signify police lights.
Fires burn in the pit below, referencing hell whilst the metal steps in front of the ship show ‘Stand and face the hounds of hell’ a line from Jackos ‘Thriller’ and again represent he darker accusations that existed.
The front of the ship show as a statue of Jacko, leaning forwards like his classic pose. The rear of the ship shows a mermaid as so often does on these rides, put in to link to my previous piece on the Little Mermaid whilst a chimp, ‘Bubbles’ sits against one of the steel legs.
Other key characters such as the crocodile, Captain Hook, Tinkerbell and Wendy are all referenced within the scene whilst the rusted bus behind the ship features graffiti by ‘The Lost Boys’ and the bus shows Neverland on the side, subtle shadows are on the bus also.There is a real subtle silhouette of Peter that exists but that is for you to find!
Through setting the lighting in the way that I have it allows for shadows to be part of the scene, a must seeing as though they are such a big part of the original concept of Peter Pan. Some are simply cast from trees, others have more life to them.
There is always a really powerful feel to seeing a theme park devoid of life, more so when it is being reclaimed by nature. Peter Pan does have a dark side in its’ narrative and original concept and the links to ‘The King Of Pop’ adds so much more should you choose to go there. The sense of loss and sadness is contrasted with the use of vivd colour in parts, quirky details and a beautiful sky where sunlight symbolises hope.
A keen eye will notice a solitary flower that refuses to be overpowered by the wild grasses and weeds that surround it. This further conveys this sense of hope and is actually one of my favourite parts of this piece.

For me, the dominant fairground ride had to be a pirate ship as I have fond memories as a child from holidays to Belgium (the birth place of my Mother). We would always visit the ‘Meli’ theme park in De Panne and it was the first thing you would see when through the gates, I always remember the loud whoosh of the boat gainst the little tyre and the lights that ran up each side.
The pirate ship and supporting structure was constructed from scratch, using textures and random objects that I saw potential to transform i.e. swimming pool steps for the harnesses on the boat. The green lights represent Peter Pan whilst the blue signify police lights. Fires burn in the pit below, referencing hell whilst the metal steps in front of the ship show ‘Stand and face the hounds of hell’ a line from Jackos ‘Thriller’ and again represent he darker accusations that existed.
The front of the ship show as a statue of Jacko, leaning forwards like his classic pose. The rear of the ship shows a mermaid as so often does on these rides, put in to link to my previous piece on the Little Mermaid whilst a chimp, ‘Bubbles’ sits against one of the steel legs.
Other key characters such as the crocodile, Captain Hook, Tinkerbell and Wendy are all referenced within the scene whilst the rusted bus behind the ship features graffiti by ‘The Lost Boys’ and the bus shows Neverland on the side, subtle shadows are on the bus also.There is a real subtle silhouette of Peter that exists but that is for you to find! Through setting the lighting in the way that I have it allows for shadows to be part of the scene, a must seeing as though they are such a big part of the original concept of Peter Pan. Some are simply cast from trees, others have more life to them.
There is always a really powerful feel to seeing a theme park devoid of life, more so when it is being reclaimed by nature. Peter Pan does have a dark side in its’ narrative and original concept and the links to ‘The King Of Pop’ adds so much more should you choose to go there. The sense of loss and sadness is contrasted with the use of vivd colour in parts, quirky details and a beautiful sky where sunlight symbolises hope. A keen eye will notice a solitary flower that refuses to be overpowered by the wild grasses and weeds that surround it. This further conveys this sense of hope and is actually one of my favourite parts of this piece. -
