Inspired by the classic stories from our childhood
Confronting the powerful and often disturbing undertones set out by the original authors such as the ‘Brothers Grimm’ and Hans Christian Andersen, these are embraced through a surreal visual representation like no other. Pieces are fused with topical messaging and intense detail, combining grit and darkness with beauty and light that creates an intriguing and thought provoking digital statement.
Mirror Mirror (Snow White) - Canvas Limited Edition

- ‘Mirror Mirror’ is dark, it’s really dark but it’s also incredibly light. It’s inspired by ‘Snow White’ but the original version that was horrific in comparison to what we all think we know. That’s what inspired the ‘Storyteller’ works from the start, just how dark the original versions were that we were read as a child.
So, what you see here is the second of four chapters, it was written in reverse. Chapter four was ‘High Ho’, written in 2015 where you see her at her worst. Where all of the results of her actions are laid out in front of you in this abandoned church but there is still this hint of innocence there to give you this sense of empathy towards the character that you can’t see. The third chapter, 2018 ‘Fear Is How I Fall’, you see her within the Prince’s castle with everything that she loves around her but sadly still with her demons that are creeping out from behind the curtains, from the walls. The battles are still there and will ultimately see her falling and failing.
This is chapter two and shows the point where she has been saved, the seal has been broken from her coffin and she’s been set free by her Prince and by those that are trying to support her around her. That’s what the animals and the hints of the dwarves etc. symbolize. It’s a very, very beautiful image. The apple tree is dying and gnarled but there’s a point where it’s come back to life and it’s blossoming and it’s reaching out and touching the coffin, coinciding with where the dove is which is something that has always been used within my work for an incredibly poignant and personal reason. It shows that impact of someone, whether that is someone that you can physically see or one’s spirit that can make such a dramatic difference.
It’s everything that’s about the battles that ‘Snow White’ faced with her demons that raged within her head, as well as physically, whilst others are trying to protect her. The line ‘the struggle within, you seal your own coffin’ is from a ‘Metallica’ lyric that was on whilst I was consumed within the concept of the picture. You listen to a song on repeat to keep you where you need to be within it. This scene, this whole concept of ‘Snow White’ is someone who is genuine, who is wonderful, but someone who has got such intense demons that ultimately lead to her downfall but with these characters around her that are desperate to keep her where she deserves to be.
The wooden cottage in the background represents that industrious nature of the dwarves that are working so hard to protect. You have the animals coming out to surround the coffin. In complete contrast between the beautiful young deer and the wolf, you can look at it two ways. Is there a threat there or ultimately is it trying to protect? The all-seeing eye of the owl, again there is a conceptual thing there with seeing the dangers and trying to warn against.
The key part of this image is the mirror. This concept of who is the most fucked up of them all, that is crucial as it shows how ‘Snow White’ is battling the constant demons within, where it’s a ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ character effectively and what that does is reveal that actually there is no evil Queen, that it’s not a separate character, that instead it’s a trait, a split personality. That evil Queen lives within ‘Snow White’ and it’s her demons, her paranoia, her lack of self-worth that can lead her to making these decisions that she will ultimately fall with. The closer you look at the image the more you can see this battle with darkness and light. Hopefully from knowing this concept behind it makes the tiniest of detail incredibly poignant and powerful.
This picture really does personify why ‘Storyteller’ is so incredibly powerful and key for me, taking me back to years ago when the original chapters where created, it’s certainly a marker and it just shows why I am an artist, why I create what I do. It’s how I talk; it’s how I scream and probably for others it’s a lot easier to listen through looking.

My Beautiful Wickedness (Wizard Of Oz) - Canvas Limited Edition

- This piece explores the character traits of the most destructive and powerful person within the story - the Wicked Witch of the West, a lady so full of rage that is born out of envying neglect that the fires still burn as fiercely as ever but does she still have a heart? Her blood dried up long ago and she knows any tears shed would wound her, possibly even be fatal if the floodgates were allowed to open. What we see of the wicked witch of the west is a woman scorned, an absolute bitch with terrifying powers who holds so much hatred towards her opposing sister that she didn’t shed a single tear when she was flattened, or actually was that just her protecting herself? Is Dorothy simply a scapegoat for something much deeper and older? There is talk of the wicked witch of the west falling foul to her fathers favouritism as a young girl with her sister being the apple of his eye - there continues the green theme again! What actually happened to make her skin literally turn green with envy?
For someone to be that full of hate and hurt they would have lost all sense of context and reasoning way back, she knows not what she does surely? Has her wickedness become a genuine art form for her? Are there any human qualities left under that shell of carbon? Does she still have a soul, a single strand of hope to see her be saved? Or is she too far gone? What this piece will does is take on a similar style and narrative to my 2016 ‘High Ho’ piece where I showed Snow White is a much darker light but where there were signs of innocence, fragility and hope and that is what I have strived to achieve with this piece. I originally planned to create a roomset but chose to focus on the throne to portray a stronger sense of power and dominance, a setting for where plans and spells are formulated, or a place to sit within her shell where she waits and 'bleeds'.
There is a window into the world outside through her crystal ball that rests against her throne, look closely and you will see the same scene as featured in ‘The Long And Winding Road’. The detail within the piece suggests that she is wrestling with her demons whilst retaining what is left of any good, is she too far gone? The decor is an intriguing mix of brutal objects and soft furnishings that glow green and subtle detailing that hints at a personality trapped. The aim was to create a real open-ended piece where certain objects make you question what has already happened possibly, the water? the slipper placed within a box that sat empty for so long? There is definitely more than meets the eye here and again something to consider in general. Just because someone can cause carnage doesn’t always mean that they are any less fragile underneath or vulnerable to further damage, more likely they just need setting free from the spell that has been cast.

My Idea Of Heaven - Large Limited Edition

- This scene casts a window into Peter Pan’s magical Neverland and is a wonderful example of my ‘Storyteller’ works where
I strive to do things differently. This is not your usual take on Neverland, I wanted to go at this from another angle with the aim to create the most beautiful vista possible.
This is a classic example where a piece evolves mid-way through into something so much more than what I originally intended to create, making it so much more beautiful and engaging even if the visual traits are almost unchanged. This is my idea of Heaven.The sun is rising over the clouds, bringing with it new hope, with the warmth brings comfort. The upper branches of the trees and the mountaintops poke through the clouds with magical fairy detail dancing around them. If you then spot the pirate ship it does then make you question whether it is actually flying through clouds or sailing through a mist, a question of scale comes into play.
However, you interpret it the end result is truly immersive and captivating. I have long had an affiliation towards the Aurora since being lucky enough to have visited Lapland several years back, if you look closely you will spot them, look closer and you will see that they are actually made from peacock feathers! The beauty is within the detail here, there is no devil.
Creating this piece was incredibly calming and challenging, I had set myself a high target to achieve with creating the most beautiful scene imaginable. This is where the piece started to transform and take on a new meaning. For me and many I would hope that there can be no other place more beautiful than Heaven.
The more I worked into the scene it took precedence over Neverland, the detail is there of course but something exists that influenced my way of thinking. You will notice the two shapes that come together as one, adding this was powerful and incredibly emotional, it changes everything.
For within Heaven, as with Neverland, age is irrelevant, you become truly free, reunited. -

Pie Crust Promises (Mary Poppins) - Canvas Limited Edition

- My concept here picks up on the Pie Crust promise line that the children use in the story and the inclusion of the carousel horses along with the negative view towards this that was mentioned in the narrative. The original story gives the impression that Mr Banks doesn’t spend too much time with or have too much time for his children whilst his mother is focused on the Suffragettes movement. This means that Mary Poppins takes on the role of their primary carer.
What I have then done is to twist things so that we introduce a gambling addiction for Mr Banks (horses) and the negative impact of this is played out within the nursery. A carousel type horse smashes into the wood floor and dominates the scene, not only does this link to the story where they become detached from the fair ride and bounce all over the bloody place but it adds drama and signifies the impact that this addiction now makes on the family. The horse is actually real yet has been retouched to look like it is not, with cracks forming. This represents how something that started out as playful and fun evolved and grew into something very real and quite dark.
The mothers dedication to the Suffragettes movement is referenced by the white sash that has a line from her song ‘cast off the shackles of yesterday’ - this was chosen as it acts as a call to action to Mr Banks to seek to stop the gambling and cast away his demons from his past. I have then chosen to show the childrens’ frustration towards the family set up by them turning on their Nanny and being vocal (through wall scribbles) that they don’t see or want Mary Poppins as part of their family, they want their parents back. Mary is shown in a good light here, offering guidance through a scrawl on the wall ‘A stitch in time saves nine’ which means if you sort out a problem immediately it may save extra work later.
Ultimately the piece takes small references from the story and manipulates them to depict the negative impact an addiction (gambling and a passion) can have on a young family where the children ultimately lose out. Both parents are aware of the issues but are simply papering over the cracks. The references are subtle and through the darkness within the piece there is ultimately hope, for change.

Policemen & Pirates (Peter Pan) - Large Limited Edition
- This piece explores the synergies between Peter Pan and Michael Jackson and is set within an abandoned Neverland Ranch. An imposing and condemned pirate ship, rusting bus and rollercoaster stand still, surrounded by signs of happier times where childhood innocence was king.
I wanted to show a clear link to Peter Pan and Michael Jackson as it clearly existed whilst he was alive and also plays on the darkness of the original story and the controversy surrounding Jacko. The title itself has a childlike game quality to it like cops and robbers etc which works with the subject matter and mentality.
For me, the dominant fairground ride had to be a pirate ship as I have fond memories as a child from holidays to Belgium (the birth place of my Mother). We would always visit the ‘Meli’ theme park in De Panne and it was the first thing you would see when through the gates, I always remember the loud whoosh of the boat gainst the little tyre and the lights that ran up each side.
The pirate ship and supporting structure was constructed from scratch, using textures and random objects that I saw potential to transform i.e. swimming pool steps for the harnesses on the boat. The green lights represent Peter Pan whilst the blue signify police lights.
Fires burn in the pit below, referencing hell whilst the metal steps in front of the ship show ‘Stand and face the hounds of hell’ a line from Jackos ‘Thriller’ and again represent he darker accusations that existed.
The front of the ship show as a statue of Jacko, leaning forwards like his classic pose. The rear of the ship shows a mermaid as so often does on these rides, put in to link to my previous piece on the Little Mermaid whilst a chimp, ‘Bubbles’ sits against one of the steel legs.
Other key characters such as the crocodile, Captain Hook, Tinkerbell and Wendy are all referenced within the scene whilst the rusted bus behind the ship features graffiti by ‘The Lost Boys’ and the bus shows Neverland on the side, subtle shadows are on the bus also.There is a real subtle silhouette of Peter that exists but that is for you to find!
Through setting the lighting in the way that I have it allows for shadows to be part of the scene, a must seeing as though they are such a big part of the original concept of Peter Pan. Some are simply cast from trees, others have more life to them.
There is always a really powerful feel to seeing a theme park devoid of life, more so when it is being reclaimed by nature. Peter Pan does have a dark side in its’ narrative and original concept and the links to ‘The King Of Pop’ adds so much more should you choose to go there. The sense of loss and sadness is contrasted with the use of vivd colour in parts, quirky details and a beautiful sky where sunlight symbolises hope.
A keen eye will notice a solitary flower that refuses to be overpowered by the wild grasses and weeds that surround it. This further conveys this sense of hope and is actually one of my favourite parts of this piece.

Rumposilshkin (Rumplestiltskin) - Limited Edition
- 'RUMPOSILSHKIN' - The follow up to my 2015 piece 'Say My Name Bitch' which unlocks and kicks open another door into this incredibly dark story
originally told by the Brothers Grimm.
A little white lie - does white represent innocence here? Not in this case. What started off white quickly blackened from the fires that burned from treating those around her like her servants whilst she laid about dreaming of riches, completely blinkered to the carnage that she has created.
They say greed breeds monsters, god ain’t that the truth! She saw an opportunity to take advantage of someone who worked tirelessly for her and who continually covered up her lies while she took the credit for everything. Abused and tormented yet with an unwaivering industrious manner that risked snapping himself in two, determined to keep to his promise until that moment when the last straw was reached and then no more.
A broken man made to feel worthless, turns to drink, turns to chapter 2. Turn the corner, turn the page, it’s blank, pick up the pen, fill the book.
A life built on a lie, well things aren’t turning out like she’d hoped. Merely a tenant within a castle, a castle with foundations cast on sand. Karma is king of your fucking castle bitch! Make hay while the sun shines because your storm clouds are growing taller behind you and the flames that follow mask out the sun that you chase.
Time will tell if she gets to wear her crown but being a queen isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be - when the King gets bored, heads can roll! Just ask Anne Boleyn!

- A light-filled room is the setting for this intriguing interpretation of Rumplestiltskin originally told by the Brothers Grimm. Taking centre stage is an industrial alternative to the typical wooden spinning wheel that mimics the story’s German heritage and better suits the intensity of the volume of straw that was turned into gold. This piece references the anger and lies that run through the story and through subtle clues and tiny detail plot out the key points and characters from this childhood classic.

Stop Feeding The Birds - Large Limited Edition
- Throughout my earlier ‘Storyteller’ works I have loved creating pieces of varying styles and scenes that showcased the wonder-full world of Mary Poppins. The narrative has always appealed as there is such quirky, randomness that glosses over a darker undertone that runs through.
A long-running story that I have been building suggests an intense relationship between Mary and Bert, one built on dominance and a battle for control yet one driven by an unquestionable love for one another. There are further suggestions to this within this crazy and bizarre scene that is overrun by birds - well they were warned not to feed them!The working title for this piece was ‘A Spoonful Of F**k Knows!’ as I wanted to create something completely and utterly random! This scene set within Regents Park in London is a follow on from an earlier piece ‘Cast Off Your Shackles’ where this time a magical Carousel dominates the scene and provides the platform for so much detail to interact with it.
The aim was to create a piece that is so intense, bold yet pretty, classic yet current and I hope that I have achieved that here. This piece along with others within my latest ‘Storyteller’ works showcases a slight shift where I have sought to bring pieces that might initially look classical bang up-to-date with references that suggest a much more current time frame. These may just simply be fun references that give the scene context to the lead characters who you don’t get to see or other more topical and political details.
This was a cracking piece to create, incredibly challenging from a technical point of view but so worth it. I take equal satisfaction in placing two Flamingos within a giant tea cup (not much reference material for that!) to seeing my beautiful British Bulldog George make his debut, I might be biased but I think he might just steal the show!
‘Stop Feeding The Birds!’ is a showcase of how I love to create a scene that initially looks to be all things bright and beautiful yet the closer you look you notice things within the grass that shift things ever so slightly. It represents the acceptance to just how close darkness exists to light in this fairground ride that they call life, however the ultimate aim is for you to join me in celebrating Dear Old Blighty!

- I do love my cars! This was a piece that I have wanted to do for years, it was all about timing and conceiving a scenario that could be the most engaging and ultimately successful, to create the ultimate movie car piece, no holds barred!
At the point of planning there were so many iconic vehicles that could have gone in with equal success, even with being selective. I wanted this piece to hit you right between the eyes, to stimulate your senses and therefore I had to find the balance between being a visual feast and being too cluttered where the impact was compromised.
As with the majority of my work you don’t get to see the lead characters, it is the setting and the detail that tells the story and with this piece it opens up the question - who are driving these machines? Could it be all of the movie characters have met up within the desert to watch a cracking car movie, hanging out around the fire, eating corn dogs, listening to Guns & Roses and a dirty V8? Or is it simply a group of enthusiasts doing just that? Over to you.
There is so much to look at here, way too much to list! I continually kept challenging myself throughout this piece, how could I make things that were already cool, cooler, to change everything up a gear or two. For example, how do you make an already cracking sky pop even more? Add a bloody space shuttle launch that’s how! Is it possible to make the Delorean any cooler? Well I’ve added a Jackal stood arrogantly in front of it so possibly!
It is so easy to focus on the cars that are clearly on view, look closely though - seems someone has left the party early? Any ideas? There are a few egos out there that could quite easily blow a gasket!
The end result is something quite special, even if I do say so myself yet there is so much more that can and will come from this, it’s just the first leg of the journey with ‘Petrolheads’.. -

The Long & Winding Road (Wizard Of Oz) - Canvas Limited Edition

- This scene focuses on the yellow brick road through the forest and all that hides within its' shadows in contrast to what can be seen in the distance, beyond the rainbow - the Emerald City. The aim was to create a really striking, colourful and ultimately beautiful landscape that resonates the sense of hope that those who seek it out cling to. A magical landscape full of extremes, beautiful poppy fields, mountains and waterfalls where the warm tones of central sun shines brightly and directly onto the brick road, look closely and you will realise that the yellow is coming from the sun that guides and warms you but the bricks are nothing other than ordinary. Is it a case of blinded by the lights? Fools gold? One poignant detail within the serenity of the sky above the Emerald City is a hot air balloon, surely the Wizard isn’t in there and bailing out?
This piece epitomises the contrast and proximity of darkness and light, literally split into two. The road takes many a twist and turn and this particular point sees it framed and flanked by the darkness of the forest where any fears that you might be carrying come to life in the darkened light of the tall trees that are pinned together by a giant spiders web. In line with my Storyteller pieces the characters are not directly shown, instead you can picture these depending on with how you interpret the piece. However the key characters who walk the road are all referenced within the forest some might be a little harder to spot but for those who know how my mind works should find it easier!
What I have strived to create is a piece that on first glance looks beautiful and cute but on a closer inspection you notice that there are darker elements that sit within the shadows, even things that are deemed as positive and beautiful appear to be leaving a trail of darkness in their wake. This is done to convey the obstacles and hindrances that those who set off on their journey for fulfilment and salvation will meet, some blatant dangers, others much more cunning and disguised and ultimately more dangerous. What I personally feel is so lovely is that amongst all of the obstacles and distractions is Toto the dog, sitting there looking right at you and just waiting for you to continue onwards, unwavering loyalty and companionship. There are examples of foul play within the scene, showing that the journey is not going to be easy but ultimately it is a positive piece that is designed to be less whimsical and more real.
The hope is for this piece to portray a sense of determination to succeed and tackle obstacles in your way head on whilst keeping one eye on where you are going, to keep on walking, baby step or full stride it doesn’t matter because each is one step closer.
