Rise Of The Machine - Large Limited Edition

- Here’s something very different for me, a scene that showcases the characters rather than eluding to them. The reason for this will become clearer in 2020 as part of my recently established ‘MD Studios’ brand but I do love the impact of this addition, something that I embraced with the ‘The Fight Of Our Lives’ (Avengers) original and ‘My Greatest Adventure’ (UP) original that went to the U.S.
My ‘Lost in Hollywood’ collections have been so incredibly well received by collectors and with my previous collection continuing to be popular in galleries I was keen to create a piece that followed on and would sit really nicely within the movie artworks yet offer something a little different.
What we see is an abandoned theme park that is starting to be reclaimed whilst an imposing entrance to ‘Lost in Hollywood’ world frames the scene. The cool thing is it is all a question of timing and what you see compared to what you could have missed. My previous style of not showing characters could have existed a mere ten seconds prior to what you now see, yet you now see a scenario where the machines are rising up and taking control.
Like with so many other movies I have toyed with the idea of interpreting ‘Short Circuit’ for years and it was at a charity event earlier in the year and the day after ‘Lost in Hollywood 2’ was released that I was heckled by Johnny 5! It reminded me just how much I loved him from the films so I had to give him the lead role here. It was his mischievous character that is shown again here as he goes on a mission to ‘tag’ the park.
I always have the main hook when planning each piece but I love to see how it evolves and adjusts as you create and build each scene and that is personified by a bumper car rocking up (well at a steady 8.8mph!) and being driven by EVE and WALL-E, totally random but really quite cute. Other iconic machines and characters play their part, quite something to imagine being stood there as Alien and Predator jump into view! Then ED-209 takes his position, he scared the hell out of me as a kid when I first watched Robocop on VHS with my mate Keith. The brutality was so raw and real I had never seen anything like it and it still freaks me out seeing the sense of panic in the room as the countdown starts. You have twenty seconds to buy!

Rise Of The Machine 2 - Canvas Limited Edition

- ‘Rise Of The Machine 2’ is the sequel to a piece that I created in 2019 as part of my ‘Retrospective’ collection that proved so popular I had to crack on with it. The concept for both pieces focuses upon a collection of Robots and man-made machines rising up and taking back control to become the dominant force. In the first piece we saw ‘Johnny 5’ running amok in the ‘Lost in Hollywood’ (did you see what I did there?!) world of an abandoned theme park. Rebelling against what he was programmed not to do and with a blatant disregard for the rules set by the management, the neckerchief-wearing blaggard graffiti’s over everything that he can get his boney little fingers on!
My initial plan was to set this sequel in another part of the theme park. Throughout my ‘Storyteller’ works I would spend countless hours searching for inspiration for derelict and abandoned settings I would often come back to scenes from the theme park within ‘Pripyat’- the ghost city in Ukraine that was devastated by the nuclear disaster. A brutal example of man-made machines failing spectacularly. What I loved was how the theme park and surrounding buildings within the city had slowly been taken over, not by man but by nature. I have always loved this concept and I simply adapted this for my ‘Rise Of The Machine’ narrative, where this time the machines fought back.
When conceiving and creating a new collection, it for me is always intense and immersive so that I can release a truly cohesive body of work. It was because of another piece from this ‘Retrospective 2’ collection that what you now see for ‘Rise Of The Machine 2’ is completely different to my original plan. This came from binging on ‘Breaking Bad’ for my ‘Let’s Cook, Bitch!’ piece and from a scene that was set in an old car breakers yard. It just stuck and the end result is something that I am incredibly happy with.
The intention for my ‘Retrospective’ ongoing body of work is one where I invite the audience to step inside the eye of my mind as I revisit memories from my formulative years and early adult-hood, the ones with minimal responsibility! The great thing with this is the crossover between a whole number of experiences that involved sport, music and movies and so on. I love the chance to blend these in with my ‘Lost In Hollywood’ collections, but with a lighter, less conceptually intense narrative and an ability to add focus to the characters that I typically leave out of view. I love combining films into one piece, to suggest that these characters all resided at the same time just in different areas but came together eventually. It is just pure good fun!
There is so much to seek out within this scene, legends such as R2-D2, C-3PO, Optimus Prime and Bumblebee shine amongst the shifting sands that surround the ominous car crusher. Other more subtle objects come to life just seconds after being previously hidden by the sand as the wind reveals them to you. What I hope is that you will stumble across a small detail that you maybe not identify immediately but on closer inspection remember how much you loved that movie and that then ignites a linked memory to that. This is what it does for me, and I ultimately feel better for it and closer to my childhood as a result.

- 'RUMPOSILSHKIN' - The follow up to my 2015 piece 'Say My Name Bitch' which unlocks and kicks open another door into this incredibly dark story

A little white lie - does white represent innocence here? Not in this case. What started off white quickly blackened from the fires that burned from treating those around her like her servants whilst she laid about dreaming of riches, completely blinkered to the carnage that she has created.
They say greed breeds monsters, god ain’t that the truth! She saw an opportunity to take advantage of someone who worked tirelessly for her and who continually covered up her lies while she took the credit for everything. Abused and tormented yet with an unwaivering industrious manner that risked snapping himself in two, determined to keep to his promise until that moment when the last straw was reached and then no more.
A broken man made to feel worthless, turns to drink, turns to chapter 2. Turn the corner, turn the page, it’s blank, pick up the pen, fill the book.
A life built on a lie, well things aren’t turning out like she’d hoped. Merely a tenant within a castle, a castle with foundations cast on sand. Karma is king of your fucking castle bitch! Make hay while the sun shines because your storm clouds are growing taller behind you and the flames that follow mask out the sun that you chase.
Time will tell if she gets to wear her crown but being a queen isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be - when the King gets bored, heads can roll! Just ask Anne Boleyn!

RUN! (Stranger Things) - Canvas Limited Edition

- Seriously, how bloody great is ‘Stranger Things’?! Anything that is set within the 80’s has half a chance of cult status and I just had to take this on! It was always a question of timing, as for the majority of the occasions when I was asked at gallery events if I would consider doing it, I hadn’t managed to even watch the damned thing and I would never create a piece of art that was hollow to me and done with a piggy eye on the coffers. After all I have to practice what I preach with that being how greed breeds monsters.
For reasons mentioned in my ‘Breaking Bad’ narrative, (uh oh, is that a cross selling tactic? – oh god I’m changing… no chance!) there were so many factors that stopped me getting involved with this beast of a story. I was always aware of it, but I just thought it was a quirky retro inspired homage to the 80’s. How wrong could I be?! How could a world of BMX bikes and ‘Eggo’ waffles also be terrorised by Demodogs and Spider Monsters?! I struggled with the Daleks from Doctor Who as a kid, but my mind has gone a little darker since then so yeah bring the mutating freaks on!
Back in 2016 and my first ‘Lost in Hollywood’ collection there was an E.T piece called ‘I’ll Be Right Here’ that featured a number of iconic bikes within a forest. A good number of people thought it was based on ‘Stranger Things’, and now I can see why. So, being a kid who was lucky enough to grow up in the 80’s, it is these vivid memories that are more important than ever and which I can draw comfort, inspiration and strength from. Step back to jump forward.
Anyway, to the actual piece! Set within a smashed up ‘Starcourt’ mall, I have created a scene that is designed to keep you guessing. With the exception of the bad guys, no characters are visible. Yet instead, I have set the composition in a way that you really get the feeling that you are stood there and bang in trouble! The aim was to create a sense of abandonment and time passing, a trait that I have embraced since my 2015 ‘Storyteller’ works. However, the silence is broken and all of a sudden, you’re not alone. Do you run? Do you stand and fight, taking on your demons head on? I guess that’s down to how your waffles are buttered.
I hope the fans of ‘Stranger Things’ really connect with this piece and get the same enjoyment from it albeit for many a different reason. I love that, I really do. Memories of trying to record the UK top 40 using my brothers’ radio to my tape deck come to life when I hear Madonna’s ‘Material Girl’ that is featured in Season 3. Playing ‘Cops and Robbers’ on my Raleigh Grifter are why I’m so drawn to these iconic bikes. I may not have shoplifted a box of waffles but my affiliation to this incredible era is one that I will keep making stronger and stronger, primarily, for my own gains that then benefits others, mind over money, pride not profit.
The brightest memories will always remain, oh shit, have I done it again?!

Memories of trying to record the UK top 40 using my brothers’ radio to my tape deck come to life when I hear Madonna’s ‘Material Girl’ that is featured in Season 3. Playing ‘Cops and Robbers’ on my Raleigh Grifter are why I’m so drawn to these iconic bikes. I may not have shoplifted a box of waffles but my affiliation to this incredible era is one that I will keep making stronger and stronger, primarily, for my own gains that then benefits others, mind over money, pride not profit.
The brightest memories will always remain, oh shit, have I done it again?!

RUN! (Stranger Things) - Original
- Seriously, how bloody great is ‘Stranger Things’?! Anything that is set within the 80’s has half a chance of cult status and I just had to take this on! It was always a question of timing, as for the majority of the occasions when I was asked at gallery events if I would consider doing it, I hadn’t managed to even watch the damned thing and I would never create a piece of art that was hollow to me and done with a piggy eye on the coffers. After all I have to practice what I preach with that being how greed breeds monsters.
For reasons mentioned in my ‘Breaking Bad’ narrative, (uh oh, is that a cross selling tactic? – oh god I’m changing… no chance!) there were so many factors that stopped me getting involved with this beast of a story. I was always aware of it, but I just thought it was a quirky retro inspired homage to the 80’s. How wrong could I be?! How could a world of BMX bikes and ‘Eggo’ waffles also be terrorised by Demodogs and Spider Monsters?! I struggled with the Daleks from Doctor Who as a kid, but my mind has gone a little darker since then so yeah bring the mutating freaks on!
Back in 2016 and my first ‘Lost in Hollywood’ collection there was an E.T piece called ‘I’ll Be Right Here’ that featured a number of iconic bikes within a forest. A good number of people thought it was based on ‘Stranger Things’, and now I can see why. So, being a kid who was lucky enough to grow up in the 80’s, it is these vivid memories that are more important than ever and which I can draw comfort, inspiration and strength from. Step back to jump forward.
Anyway, to the actual piece! Set within a smashed up ‘Starcourt’ mall, I have created a scene that is designed to keep you guessing. With the exception of the bad guys, no characters are visible. Yet instead, I have set the composition in a way that you really get the feeling that you are stood there and bang in trouble! The aim was to create a sense of abandonment and time passing, a trait that I have embraced since my 2015 ‘Storyteller’ works. However, the silence is broken and all of a sudden, you’re not alone. Every great movie has a great soundtrack doesn’t it! You hear that song, and it catapults you straight back to that scene that you know and love.
With Ghostbusters, some of the best songs are the ones that remind you of the scenes that maybe aren’t the so-called big moments, the quirky instrumentals that make you laugh. Whilst I was creating ‘Kick Its Ass!’ that was set in the ballroom, having that playing in the background was just brilliant!
November 2022 saw me release my first vinyl LP edition ‘WOW That’s What I F*cking Call Memories’ and it went down a treat! That was the sign that there would be plenty more, as everyone has their favourite album, or soundtrack. The format is so carefully considered and thought out that the result is pure nostalgia, without being stuffy. The editions are the perfect accompaniment to supporting print edition from the movie or to simply sit alongside other vinyl editions. It just makes sense!
Taking a previously sold-out image ‘Saving the Day’ and digitally remastering it into a collectible vinyl LP has turned out so well. All the vibrancy of the movies is captured within the intense hand painted details on the backboard, whilst the album cover is ageing and worn, well played for sure! Slimer features heavily, as he races towards you ready to cover you in his goo, and I couldn’t resist getting our favourite church flattening marshmallow man in there too, what a legend!
So, hang this on your wall, grab your stick and put the needle on the record! Carefully!
