The Road To Ruin (The Wizard of Oz) - Original

Mark Davies British Artist

  • My interpretation of The Wizard of Oz based on the theory that the story relates to the gold vs silver battle in america and the decline of both farming and industry.

The scarecrow represents the farming industry, the tin man the heavy industry and the lion, politics. The piece focuses on a gritty rusted (links to tin man) truck that was used to transport organs (tin man wanted a brain etc etc) - the subtle reference of a bullet hole in the windshield hints at it being a black market criminal operation.

There is lots of subtle detail within the piece with the colours and light playing their part, the golden eagle swooping down on the bag of gold with the single silver bar references the ‘gold standard’. The inclusion of the twister is open to interpretation, has it already been or is it coming back (i.e. not learned their lesson - links to the more recent meltdown of the USA.
