I Wish Someday (Aladdin) - Original

Mark Davies British Artist

  • As with the likes of The Beauty and The Beast, Aladdin is so famous for its’ Disney version and the characters and objects that have been brought to life within. For obvious reasons I have chosen to steer clear of making blatant references to the film but have been realistic enough to respect that the reasons that people have such an fondness for this story is largely down to the film. So in keeping with my work on the Storyteller pieces I have closely referenced the original story by Antoine Galland but also brought in some key features from the film but in a subtle way.

The perfect setting to showcase the middle eastern colours is at a Bazaar, the array of coloured lanterns and goods is immense. My choice has been to add depth and atmosphere by setting this piece within a closed Bazaar, devoid of warmth and colour. However what we see is a solitary monkey that dominates the scene who is sat in his little moment interacting with a number of shiny and beautiful things.

The story acknowledges the character as having a fascination for all things shiny and pretty so this fits, the monkey relates to Abu from the film but have kept it subtle by not adding anything to him. Instead his expression and body position is one that is really endearing - it shows him being completely immersed in what surrounds him, a comfort blanket almost and gains safety from what he has surrounded himself with.

He is playing with the lamp and the detail shows that the magic is starting, dream-like detail comes from the lamp and dances around his eyes and head to depict him being deep in thought, making his wish and imagining what that will entail. The wall to the right shows that only two wishes have been used, this is the third. The story sets it out that the monkey is frustrated and sad with how life is, living on and stealing from the streets so this concept and the title embraces that and portrays a strong sense of hope.

The title of the piece is chosen to be open-ended and for the person studying the piece to choose what the wish could involve, I hope it also means that person could bond with the piece as they can relate it through something personal that they wish for change. Aladdin at one point says to his monkey companion that someday, things will be better. So this is another reason why the title is chosen.

The story has its’ good share of darkness throughout and the very nature of people lurking in the shadows, pretending to be people that they are not and the intent to harm those that are good is shown in the piece by having subtle areas of darkness that come from the shadows, this contrasts really nicely with the beautiful lighting and tones that dominate the piece. The darkness exists, it’s just harder to find and ultimately overpowered.
