It is a piece that I have wanted to do for a long time and is my mother’s favourite and one that struck a chord with me growing up mainly because of just how bloody sad it is. If you simply replicated the story it would be too sad for someone to want to put up possibly so I wanted to interpret it where we turn sadness into beauty and hope. I wanted to depict a kind of ‘never again’ type feeling from the piece, where the neglect and cold are gone. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe scene shows the little girl reaching out to the light from her grandma who is in heaven, her body shape is set to depict this acceptance that she is passing but also in a more positive way that she is acting like a care-free little girl - dancing and being happy, not made to sell matches for her father in the cold. The glow radiating form her chest represents all that is good and her spirit that is moving upwards, there is also a subtle dove in line with the first piece. I have chosen to add angel wings, very subtly as it represents that she is becoming an angel, strengthening the sense of the beautiful transition. Her body is made up from tiny sparkles that symbolise the glow from the matches that she made to sell which are complemented with the tiny dream-like icons that flutter around her body. I have created pockets of drama through brushstrokes and textures and vivid colour along with beautiful light. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHundreds of tiny hearts come together to form the mermaid and contrast with the abstract markings that represent the rock that she sits on. For me it is how she just sits calmly, looking out to see, waiting with hope. The colours of the hearts that make up her upper body depict that emotion and love that she holds for the Prince. You always wake up fine, unaffected, right? Are these from the townsfolk or are these in fact the battles in his head laid out for all to see? The title being a reflection on Gods’ act to wipe out all that was bad and bring the flood. There is also a hint there to life onboard the ark, not all plain sailing and that, trying to imagine the frustration, worry, boredom and cramped conditions for all those within the Ark. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe scene shows a beautiful expanse of calm water with a hint of the destructing land in the distance from what they are sailing away from. The tops of the mountains and volcanoes are visible, smoking above the waters, with flashes of lightning. Here I wanted to make you question whether these are visible due to the water not quite reaching the summits or if the waters are receeding and leaving the fires of hell still burning - hinting that God didn’t quite achieve a total cleanse - dark forces still remain. You always see artist interpretations of the Ark being tossed about on huge waves or when you do see an image in calm waters, the ark is sterile and not shown in true context in my opinion. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSo I wanted to set about constructing an imposing and intriguing boat, pieced together from single strips of wood and other textures. I wanted to focus on perspective in my work, to create subtle drama in the composition and scale. The Ark is huge, as soon as you add the animals it conveys just how big it is otherwise as it is surrounded by water it would be hard to achieve that. I wanted to think long-term, those on board need food and reminders of their natural habitat. The deck has a cut away area where animals interact with trees, trees that attract birds. The Ark has fishing nets set out, not quite the feeding of the five thousand but another hint of long-term survival. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eYou typically only see cramped animals on deck in imagery, I have shown sea life following the Ark, all for one and one for all messaging - they are joining the journey for survival. I think by adding the animals, birds and sea life in this way it really adds something lovely without impacting on the integrity of the piece. An imposing and condemned pirate ship, rusting bus and rollercoaster stand still, surrounded by signs of happier times where childhood innocence was king.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI wanted to show a clear link to Peter Pan and Michael Jackson as it clearly existed whilst he was alive and also plays on the darkness of the original story and the controversy surrounding Jacko. The title itself has a childlike game quality to it like cops and robbers etc which works with the subject matter and mentality.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFor me, the dominant fairground ride had to be a pirate ship as I have fond memories as a child from holidays to Belgium (the birth place of my Mother). We would always visit the ‘Meli’ theme park in De Panne and it was the first thing you would see when through the gates, I always remember the loud whoosh of the boat gainst the little tyre and the lights that ran up each side. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe pirate ship and supporting structure was constructed from scratch, using textures and random objects that I saw potential to transform i.e. swimming pool steps for the harnesses on the boat. The green lights represent Peter Pan whilst the blue signify police lights. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFires burn in the pit below, referencing hell whilst the metal steps in front of the ship show ‘Stand and face the hounds of hell’ a line from Jackos ‘Thriller’ and again represent he darker accusations that existed. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe front of the ship show as a statue of Jacko, leaning forwards like his classic pose. The rear of the ship shows a mermaid as so often does on these rides, put in to link to my previous piece on the Little Mermaid whilst a chimp, ‘Bubbles’ sits against one of the steel legs.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOther key characters such as the crocodile, Captain Hook, Tinkerbell and Wendy are all referenced within the scene whilst the rusted bus behind the ship features graffiti by ‘The Lost Boys’ and the bus shows Neverland on the side, subtle shadows are on the bus also.There is a real subtle silhouette of Peter that exists but that is for you to find! \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThrough setting the lighting in the way that I have it allows for shadows to be part of the scene, a must seeing as though they are such a big part of the original concept of Peter Pan. Some are simply cast from trees, others have more life to them. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThere is always a really powerful feel to seeing a theme park devoid of life, more so when it is being reclaimed by nature. Peter Pan does have a dark side in its’ narrative and original concept and the links to ‘The King Of Pop’ adds so much more should you choose to go there. The sense of loss and sadness is contrasted with the use of vivd colour in parts, quirky details and a beautiful sky where sunlight symbolises hope. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eA keen eye will notice a solitary flower that refuses to be overpowered by the wild grasses and weeds that surround it. A recent trip out to the cinema with family to watch the ‘Christopher Robin’ movie was the catalyst to begin as the narrative caught me out, seeing the consequences of neglecting one’s family because of work played out in such a considered manner struck a chord and pulled at the heart strings. Innocent yet guilty.  \n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe challenge for this piece was deciding what would be best fitting, to embrace the beautiful sunlight that shines through 100 Acre Wood or to stand in the shadows of the Heffalumps and Woozles. If I’m honest, it’s a pretty even split as there is so much within the original narrative and the theories behind the characters that lends itself to a very intense and complex piece. However, at the time of planning this scene the sun was shining through the studio window and the clouds had cleared within my mind so what we see is an image that embraces everything that is enchanting and uplifting, created to make you feel comforted and nostalgic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNew works will feature modern-day references to link to the world that we live within and seek to escape from when we reminisce, acting as a stark contrast and helping to relay my narrative. This is showcased within the scene in front of you as you look out across the stunning East Sussex landscape. A table is being set for afternoon tea, but for whose benefit? Look at the details that surround the bench, is this simply a case of parent playing out their child’s fantasy or rather their own? Maybe their love for the story still takes up so much space in their heart? Has obsession won through and the only friends dining are those still cherished from childhood? Sometimes the smallest things take the most room.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs a father experiencing the pressures that come with having a beautiful daughter racing towards her teens, it is becoming increasingly evident just how the world we look back to in seek of comfort is so completely different to the one that we reside within. This piece reflects that, it’s a tale of contrasts, darkness and light yet represented in a different way. The scene acknowledges the change from how we used to read the stories by A.A Milne as children to how ours often now do. Does that mean that the screen dilutes the scene? Probably not, is there a case for pixels actually creating a much more engaging and immersive experience for the young mind? Possibly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy aim, as with so much of my work is to create interaction between characters, to convey emotion. What I strive to achieve is creating an image that isn’t static, where what you see now is different to the one that I created a moment before. A stark iPad left in the grass soon attracts the attention of a woodland rabbit, or two ladybirds become acquainted… It is very much what you can’t see that is as important as what you can, that is where your imagination is awakened.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs the process of creating these pieces evolves over a good number of days they can often end up very different to what was initially intended as my mindset may change, even for that short moment. I will be honest, with this piece I had to fight the urge to mutate the concept and inject another level to the narrative based around the modern-day gadgets but out of respect for all of those who adore Winnie and friends I chose not to. It’s still there, I’m just not going to tell you!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo many know and love the characters for their ‘Disneyfied’ feel and I can see why, however further embracing the contrasts I have chosen to show the original toys that Christopher Robin owned as a child that inspired his father to create his masterpieces. They are beautiful and show their age and personality so well. Christopher actually lost Roo in an Appleyard back then so exists in the modern state, sat next to Kanga this reinforces the concept.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt’s amazing what happens when there is tea and honey, everyone and everything joins in. What’s with the random black bear cub and swan? You won’t find these within the Disney store yet these are two fundamental animals that without them things would be very different. Pooh bear was actually inspired by both, Winnie being a Canadian bear cub that Christopher Robin saw in a London Zoo and changed his teddy bear from Edward to Winnie. As for Pooh? The narrative has always appealed as there is such quirky, randomness that glosses over a darker undertone that runs through.\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eA long-running story that I have been building suggests an intense relationship between Mary and Bert, one built on dominance and a battle for control yet one driven by an unquestionable love for one another. There are further suggestions to this within this crazy and bizarre scene that is overrun by birds - well they were warned not to feed them!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe working title for this piece was ‘A Spoonful Of F**k Knows!’ as I wanted to create something completely and utterly random! This scene set within Regents Park in London is a follow on from an earlier piece ‘Cast Off Your Shackles’ where this time a magical Carousel dominates the scene and provides the platform for so much detail to interact with it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe aim was to create a piece that is so intense, bold yet pretty, classic yet current and I hope that I have achieved that here. This piece along with others within my latest ‘Storyteller’ works showcases a slight shift where I have sought to bring pieces that might initially look classical bang up-to-date with references that suggest a much more current time frame. These may just simply be fun references that give the scene context to the lead characters who you don’t get to see or other more topical and political details.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis was a cracking piece to create, incredibly challenging from a technical point of view but so worth it. Could it be all of the movie characters have met up within the desert to watch a cracking car movie, hanging out around the fire, eating corn dogs, listening to Guns \u0026amp; Roses and a dirty V8? I continually kept challenging myself throughout this piece, how could I make things that were already cool, cooler, to change everything up a gear or two. For example, how do you make an already cracking sky pop even more? Add a bloody space shuttle launch that’s how! Is it possible to make the Delorean any cooler? Well I’ve added a Jackal stood arrogantly in front of it so possibly!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt is so easy to focus on the cars that are clearly on view, look closely though - seems someone has left the party early? This is not your usual take on Neverland, I wanted to go at this from another angle with the aim to create the most beautiful vista possible.\u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eThis is a classic example where a piece evolves mid-way through into something so much more than what I originally intended to create, making it so much more beautiful and engaging even if the visual traits are almost unchanged. This is my idea of Heaven.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe sun is rising over the clouds, bringing with it new hope, with the warmth brings comfort. The upper branches of the trees and the mountaintops poke through the clouds with magical fairy detail dancing around them. If you then spot the pirate ship it does then make you question whether it is actually flying through clouds or sailing through a mist, a question of scale comes into play.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, you interpret it the end result is truly immersive and captivating. I have long had an affiliation towards the Aurora since being lucky enough to have visited Lapland several years back, if you look closely you will spot them, look closer and you will see that they are actually made from peacock feathers! The beauty is within the detail here, there is no devil.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCreating this piece was incredibly calming and challenging, I had set myself a high target to achieve with creating the most beautiful scene imaginable. This is where the piece started to transform and take on a new meaning. For me and many I would hope that there can be no other place more beautiful than Heaven.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe more I worked into the scene it took precedence over Neverland, the detail is there of course but something exists that influenced my way of thinking. It is a much, much darker version - awful in places, even for me! What we all know and love from the Disney version is so far from the reality here it is scary.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis piece is a classic example where I build a secondary narrative into the piece that then takes over and consumes the image, albeit it making it much more beautiful. There is no fairy godmother - instead a pear tree that grew on Cinderella’s dead mothers grave whilst birds flocked together as one to destroy the ugly sisters in a way you would not think possible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo this piece runs in line with the overriding concept that pushes Cinderella into that coach and that gets her to the ballroom to ultimately be rescued by her Prince yet it represents so much more, to me and hopefully to others who can find affiliation to the concept.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe doves, an incredibly poignant detail throughout my work, come together when one simply isn’t enough in the hope that working together they can make the difference as they desperately try to help the person who has fallen, who sees no way out, before it is too far gone. She had her Prince, she could have lived happily ever after but she threw it all away and ended up hitting rock bottom, holed up in a derelict church within the forest, devoid of money and self-worth she had resorted to other ways of feeding her habit. Yet what defined a happy life? A life built on materialistic luxuries that glossed over the cracks that ran riot.\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe hope was to create a piece that makes you change your opinion on the girl out of view, we can be so quick to judge and dismiss. I try to encourage a closer look, for clues that create empathy towards the young woman. Is she a monster, or is she the victim of the cards that she has been dealt?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo for this piece entitled ‘Fear Is How I Fall’ it sets a scene that can either be the prequel, or sequel depending on how you view it. Have you walked into her room before her downfall, where you notice the contributing factors starting to blow in from the world outside? Or are we actually in fact seeing her after being rescued once again by her Prince who simply could not walk away like others who had already done so.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you favour the latter you will notice that cracks remain, clouding the clear. Do her phantoms still stand tall behind her? Her wounds, they will not heal. The title ‘Fear Is How I Fall’ suggests fragility, bringing with it empathy. There’s something inside her that pulls beneath the surface, consuming, confusing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a classic example of how I strive to show the proximity that darkness resides to light, where one can so easily fall back yet equally walk clear. Will good win out? Will she live happily ever after? This scene shows what the children saw as they stumbled upon the witches house. The whole concept across both pieces focuses on deception and trickery, leading you into temptation and effectively then delivering you straight to evil.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSo what you see is incredibly dark and sinister yet sugar coated and quirky, as well as slightly odd! Sugar-filled treats appear much larger than they normally are, or is that just in the minds of those who are tempted by them? As with my other more recent ‘Storyteller’ pieces there are a number of current references that suggest a secondary narrative that I love to inject into my work. For example, the oversized sweets and cakes link to an ongoing concern of child obesity and you will spot subtle objects such as a bottle of cola, scrawled messaging slating the ‘sugar tax’. Have you spotted the pig?! \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLook how the gingerbread men appear quite sinister with one coming out of the shadows towards you akin to a horror film, one has already been attacked, is all hope not lost? The swan, a character who guided the children to safety in the Brothers Grimm version appears to be doing the complete opposite here, who can be trusted, if anyone? I thought I knew how it was going to look, I knew it was going to be a nursery scene and a London skyline but it’s lovely to see how it has evolved from immersing myself within the piece and putting myself in that room and keeping the image totally light, as much as the temptation to add some form of darkness to it, I’ve not, I’ve resisted, it’s completely light. There’s nothing in there and if can see anything dark in there then you’re certainly darker in mind than me!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt shows that point that’s linked to ‘Forever Young’, my 2017 piece where we see Peter depicted in this really vibrant silhouette rising up in front of ‘Big Ben’ but what you see is this beautiful nursery scene with Peter and the children flying upwards and past it but instead of being surrounded by the London skyline, when you look from left to right you see this heaven-like ‘Neverland’, which was a 2018 piece entitled ‘My Idea Of Heaven’. So, it shows this journey from reality to where you go in your dreams. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThat’s what this whole piece is about, the power to dream and it’s so poignant now because of the restrictions that our children are living with, never mind us but for our children to not be able to do this, to not be able to do that. It just makes you worry what is in their head and more importantly what’s not. When you think back to being a kid and the roleplay and the freedom to really play without any restrictions, without any genuine danger, what came from that was beautiful and I guess that is the worry with the restrictions at the moment. Of course, they are going to lift but it’s still this bigger concern questioning whether kids have really forgotten how to play, have they forgotten how to dream? \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e What this picture does is show exactly what comes from dreaming and that doesn’t necessarily mean from when you are asleep, it’s your imagination, it’s using the power of thought to transform yourself to somewhere totally different which results in being somebody completely different. Whether that’s through confidence or something you want to do later on in life from being inspired by these dreams. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt’s a really beautiful, classic nursery setting with all of the toys laid out which shows the point before where they were playing and fuelling their imagination. If you can see on the wall there is a ‘Little Mermaid’ piece called ‘Hope’ and you can imagine Wendy looking at that image and being inspired to imagine and to dream. You have the animals coming out to surround the coffin. In complete contrast between the beautiful young deer and the wolf, you can look at it two ways. The all-seeing eye of the owl, again there is a conceptual thing there with seeing the dangers and trying to warn against. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe key part of this image is the mirror. This concept of who is the most fucked up of them all, that is crucial as it shows how ‘Snow White’ is battling the constant demons within, where it’s a ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ character effectively and what that does is reveal that actually there is no evil Queen, that it’s not a separate character, that instead it’s a trait, a split personality. That evil Queen lives within ‘Snow White’ and it’s her demons, her paranoia, her lack of self-worth that can lead her to making these decisions that she will ultimately fall with. So, what you can see in the image is an absolute buzz from all the butterflies fluttering around, the smoke rising up from the chimneys, the sunlight coming through the buildings, the clouds, the birds, the clock within the glass dome with the hands running away from themselves. Everything’s just stopped. The working title for the image was ‘Please Don’t Leave’ linking to ‘It’s Not Goodbye’, it’s two people effectively talking to each other, silently if anything, reassuring that nothing is forever, and we will meet again. So, it’s a really beautifully, poignant concept behind a very pretty image. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e It actually relates to a 2016 commissioned piece entitled ‘The Beast From The East’ which was a much darker concept where it’s showing within the same setting, a toxic, dominating relationship that Mary and Bert had. It was something that I completely put together myself and it was pretty intense! Yet what you now see is that it’s a new chapter, things have moved on, evolved and are much lighter. What you have within this ultra-urban space is the impact of this persons work, where everything is so beautiful and unexpected within that environment and it’s what you leave behind, effectively. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e This concept of evolution with the butterflies being set free, the leaves changing colour, the flowers growing and withering but new ones coming in their place, there’s just so much going on. It’s an image that I feel incredibly happy to have created, there’s a sense of comfort achieved, it’s how I talk through my art. I hope that so many people will find the same sort of comfort within this piece from what I’m trying to say, as well as it being a really quirky reference to ‘Mary Poppins’. So, what you can see in the image is an absolute buzz from all the butterflies fluttering around, the smoke rising up from the chimneys, the sunlight coming through the buildings, the clouds, the birds, the clock within the glass dome with the hands running away from themselves. Everything’s just stopped. The working title for the image was ‘Please Don’t Leave’ linking to ‘It’s Not Goodbye’, it’s two people effectively talking to each other, silently if anything, reassuring that nothing is forever, and we will meet again. So, it’s a really beautifully, poignant concept behind a very pretty image. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e It actually relates to a 2016 commissioned piece entitled ‘The Beast From The East’ which was a much darker concept where it’s showing within the same setting, a toxic, dominating relationship that Mary and Bert had. It was something that I completely put together myself and it was pretty intense! Yet what you now see is that it’s a new chapter, things have moved on, evolved and are much lighter. What you have within this ultra-urban space is the impact of this persons work, where everything is so beautiful and unexpected within that environment and it’s what you leave behind, effectively. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis concept of evolution with the butterflies being set free, the leaves changing colour, the flowers growing and withering but new ones coming in their place, there’s just so much going on. It’s an image that I feel incredibly happy to have created, there’s a sense of comfort achieved, it’s how I talk through my art. The insecurities that Alice faced, being scared of adults etc. That was the driving force behind this piece. Everyone is touched by mental health in so many different ways and with so many different outcomes and contributing factors. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFor me what is so interesting is what do you see when you stand there looking into that scene? Do you see an enchanted forest with the light trying to push through the fog or are you actually under water? Are they reeds and weeds with the jelly fish etc.? What I’ve done is try to trick you because I didn’t just want this to become a ‘Tim Burton’ type piece, there are parallels to my work and that’s why I love his films. The Jelly fish are there instead of toadstools, you can see the similarities with their shape but for me it was the idea of them swaying, with everything moving. That’s the idea when you’re in that state of mind and things are so intense and almost giddy, everything starts to sway, it becomes too much, a bit surreal. Or you can just look at it like you’re off your head! How do you interpret it? \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Everything is littered out around you, the pressures that you face that will help you fall down. Like the drink, the oversized macaroon, they’re all symbolic. The mirror links to my ‘Snow White’ piece from this collection. It’s what you see looking back at you. ‘You’re too small’, ‘I’m too big’, ‘I’m mad’. It’s these things that you’re either told or tell yourself. Another link with that piece is that my concept with the ‘Queen of Hearts’ is actually Alice, that it’s a split personality. It’s her darkness that is trying to push her back down that rabbit hole and keep her there. It’s just me trying to put my take on it. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe door being central is key, the door to reality. It just shows how close that is to wherever you are and however far down you are. It’s how easy it is to fall back down. Amongst all of the darkness there is this lovely detail like the butterflies that I use so much to represent being free that are coming out from the shadows and rising up. Probably not, is there a case for pixels actually creating a much more engaging and immersive experience for the young mind? What I strive to achieve is creating an image that isn’t static, where what you see now is different to the one that I created a moment before. A stark iPad left in the grass soon attracts the attention of a woodland rabbit, or two ladybirds become acquainted… It is very much what you can’t see that is as important as what you can, that is where your imagination is awakened. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e As the process of creating these pieces evolves over a good number of days they can often end up very different to what was initially intended as my mindset may change, even for that short moment. I will be honest, with this piece I had to fight the urge to mutate the concept and inject another level to the narrative based around the modern-day gadgets but out of respect for all of those who adore Winnie and friends I chose not to. Christopher actually lost Roo in an Appleyard back then so exists in the modern state, sat next to Kanga this reinforces the concept. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e It’s amazing what happens when there is tea and honey, everyone and everything joins in. What’s with the random black bear cub and swan? You won’t find these within the Disney store yet these are two fundamental animals that without them things would be very different. Pooh bear was actually inspired by both, Winnie being a Canadian bear cub that Christopher Robin saw in a London Zoo and changed his teddy bear from Edward to Winnie. As for Pooh? There is talk of the wicked witch of the west falling foul to her fathers favouritism as a young girl with her sister being the apple of his eye - there continues the green theme again! This is a very different interpretation of Cinderella based initially on Aschenputtel (Cinderella) written by the Brothers Grimm. It is a much, much darker version - awful in places, even for me! What we all know and love from the Disney version is so far from the reality here it is scary. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e This piece is a classic example where I build a secondary narrative into the piece that then takes over and consumes the image, albeit it making it much more beautiful. There is no fairy godmother - instead a pear tree that grew on Cinderella’s dead mothers grave whilst birds flocked together as one to destroy the ugly sisters in a way you would not think possible. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e So this piece runs in line with the overriding concept that pushes Cinderella into that coach and that gets her to the ballroom to ultimately be rescued by her Prince yet it represents so much more, to me and hopefully to others who can find affiliation to the concept. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The doves, an incredibly poignant detail throughout my work, come together when one simply isn’t enough in the hope that working together they can make the difference as they desperately try to help the person who has fallen, who sees no way out, before it is too far gone. It was the seed for me looking at how the state of mind of the BFG could take a lead role in my interpretation. He is undoubtedly good, he resides amongst all these terrible giants yet has made it his life’s work to catch dreams, filter them and give them to the sleeping children. Look at his relationship with Sophie, really lovely. However what if the lines became blurred? \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e To those who see him in his cloak, in the shadows, tie him to the disappearance of the town’s children, but he keeps telling himself he is good. Everyone has demons, voices, doubts. What if his naive, child-like nature was infiltrated and overwhelmed by these dark thoughts? It’s just a bad dream isn’t it? You always wake up fine, unaffected, right? They’re just children, it’s just a dream. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e In a clear state of mind, when he’s on the job he meticulously filters and sorts the good from the bad, my piece sets out the scene when for reasons only known to him the dream bottles have been mixed up. How can something so beautiful do so much bad? It’s just a dream anyway... will be fine in the morning anyway. Dare to dream? \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e In my piece the BFG is on the street in the midnight hour with the effects of his work there for all to see, but so are the battles between what he does, or thinks he does, and those that despise and fear him. For example the walls and balcony are daubed with negative and aggressive messaging and often show a reply from the BFG to hit back. Are these from the townsfolk or are these in fact the battles in his head laid out for all to see? His Dream Case is his most personal and treasured possession, the conflict, frustrations and battles spill out onto this too. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The scene puts beauty first, to the front albeit mixed with darkness. Things lay in the shadows, catch your eye and then stay with you, reminiscent of the plot and his mindset maybe? Darker versions tell of the prince being obsessed by her and raping her whilst alseep which is pretty bad, not something I would reference but only adds to the intensity of the story. My concept is to portray a scene where a girl became a mother at a young age and subsequently life passed her by, effectively being asleep (there’s a reference to being fine before the little prick!). The baby reference is therefore used without any refernence to anything worse. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Detail within the piece outlines her state of mind and the battle with her demons. The battle between dark and light, good and bad battle it out within her four walls, being the thorns and the roses. The fact that the thorn exists so close to the petal on a rose is perfect and is why I use so frequently as I use it to symbolise the two sides to a person’s character and their personal battles. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eShe has regressed within her walls and herself, yet there are still subtle touches that depict beauty and serenity, yet so close to how she sees herself (the reason the mirror has been taken down from the wall and defaced). Her scrawls on the walls, bed and mirror are based on lyrics by Arnor Dan (vocalist on ITVs Broadchurch and lead singer of Icelandic band Agent Fresco). The song in particular that inspired me with the concept for this piece is ‘Bemoan’ - it’s incredible and fitting, all about not wanting the bell of age to ring for him - to not be left behind and how his demons are so tall and so many that he cant see the white of walls.
