You need to look back to leap forward and it seems that I have built a cracking reputation for amplifying the magic within nostalgia, taking subjects that we all know and love and making them brighter, bolder and better.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI love how so many enjoy seeing what resides within my mind and how I interpret popular subjects from years gone by and this has driven this new collection forward. With how things are outside of the studio I find myself looking back to memories growing up, channelling my mind in the hope that each memory becomes more vivid. I wanted this piece to hit you right between the eyes, to stimulate your senses and therefore I had to find the balance between being a visual feast and being too cluttered where the impact was compromised.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAs with the majority of my work you don’t get to see the lead characters, it is the setting and the detail that tells the story and with this piece it opens up the question - who are driving these machines? Could it be all of the movie characters have met up within the desert to watch a cracking car movie, hanging out around the fire, eating corn dogs, listening to Guns \u0026amp; Roses and a dirty V8? Or is it simply a group of enthusiasts doing just that? Over to you.\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThere is so much to look at here, way too much to list! I continually kept challenging myself throughout this piece, how could I make things that were already cool, cooler, to change everything up a gear or two. For example, how do you make an already cracking sky pop even more? Add a bloody space shuttle launch that’s how! Is it possible to make the Delorean any cooler? Well I’ve added a Jackal stood arrogantly in front of it so possibly!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt is so easy to focus on the cars that are clearly on view, look closely though - seems someone has left the party early? Any ideas? Just what on earth have you just stumbled upon? When I was planning this body of work I wanted to include some cracking nostalgic pieces that brought back all of those memories from growing up in the 80’s.\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e‘Doctor Who’ was a must, it sticks in my head from watching with my family. The quirkiness was great but even with the ropey special effects it had a darkness that caused a particular recurring nightmare that I will leave well alone! \u003cbr\u003e \u003cbr\u003eI felt that there was a big opportunity to create something really special, something that didn’t appear to have been done to date, a scene loaded with an incredible amount of detail that was truly authentic and that the die-hard fans could embrace. It’s not a subject that you can rush or take on lightly for sure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe catalyst for ‘Time Lord’ was the huge new chapter with the series that saw the introduction of the first female Doctor played by the talented Jodie Whittaker, an actress who I had the pleasure of meeting through my obsession with the ITV drama ‘Broadchurch’ with the plot truly capturing my imagination and the soundtrack inspiring so many of my works.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI love to inject a subtle narrative within the detail of the scene and this was embraced with the battle of control between the new arrival and the previous Doctor. There are small references to seek out that suggest something is going on, it just depends on how your mind works!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA piece created to enjoy and to interact with, to stir up great memories, to take a trip back in time whilst looking to the future - see what I did there? Without doubt the most requested and anticipated sequel to one of my earlier works so even though I always knew what I would do it certainly added something to the process! In fact, it almost didn’t happen, oh how we laugh seeing someone drive off with their fuel cap on their roof from a petrol station. What about leaving your studio in pitch blackness with your laptop on the roof before getting home and realising you left it in the studio but then approach a bend in the road to see what is blatantly your laptop smashed to bits after being run over by what looked like a monster truck. \u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe piece was about 80% done and saved ‘locally’ and due to go to print in two days’ time, oh how I wept like a baby. Blubbering and crapping myself aside I luckily was saved by ‘iCloud’ and was able to finish it to what you now see today. There’s a story for the Grandkids right there.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e‘The Memory Remains’ focused on an intriguing, classic toy shop – a million miles away from how we shop for our kids nowadays. So, what we see in the follow up is inside the toy shop, a nostalgic feast of pretty much every toy that you can think back to owning or wanting to own. The room is full to bursting with classic games, toys and sweets in the hope that I have created the ultimate shrine to our childhood playtime. This is without doubt the most labour-intensive piece that I have created to date, with in excess of one hundred hours going into the scene. There are subtle qualities that link visually with the first piece in terms of composition and I am keen to see if you spot them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am always keen for my pieces to link together and this is done here by some of the toys and teddies being referenced in the toy shop that are also shown in my 2019 ‘Skool’s Out’ piece where the Summer holidays are in full swing (can’t help myself with the puns). This shows that everything revolves around the toy shop that you see here now, there was none of this shopping around or click and collecting – it was that trip in with you family or friends to the toy shop in town and you loved and lived every minute of it. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo, for everyone who owns the first piece or missed out but hoped for a great follow up I genuinely hope that you love what you see and that I have done justice to your memories. Without doubt the most requested and anticipated sequel to one of my earlier works so even though I always knew what I would do it certainly added something to the process! In fact, it almost didn’t happen, oh how we laugh seeing someone drive off with their fuel cap on their roof from a petrol station. What about leaving your studio in pitch blackness with your laptop on the roof before getting home and realising you left it in the studio but then approach a bend in the road to see what is blatantly your laptop smashed to bits after being run over by what looked like a monster truck. \u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe piece was about 80% done and saved ‘locally’ and due to go to print in two days’ time, oh how I wept like a baby. Blubbering and crapping myself aside I luckily was saved by ‘iCloud’ and was able to finish it to what you now see today. There’s a story for the Grandkids right there.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e‘The Memory Remains’ focused on an intriguing, classic toy shop – a million miles away from how we shop for our kids nowadays. So, what we see in the follow up is inside the toy shop, a nostalgic feast of pretty much every toy that you can think back to owning or wanting to own. The room is full to bursting with classic games, toys and sweets in the hope that I have created the ultimate shrine to our childhood playtime. This is without doubt the most labour-intensive piece that I have created to date, with in excess of one hundred hours going into the scene. There are subtle qualities that link visually with the first piece in terms of composition and I am keen to see if you spot them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am always keen for my pieces to link together and this is done here by some of the toys and teddies being referenced in the toy shop that are also shown in my 2019 ‘Skool’s Out’ piece where the Summer holidays are in full swing (can’t help myself with the puns). I love how it becomes so much greater than the sum of it’s parts, how it takes over and becomes a way of life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e‘Quadrophenia’ has long been on the list of films to tackle for me, it was simply about timing. The cult groups of the Mods and Rockers are so iconic and seeing as though the subject matter has been ‘done to death’ and largely in the same way I wanted to do something a little different.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI won’t profess to belonging to either of the two. I can’t ride a motorbike or a scooter, the closest I came was getting a bone-shaking ‘backy’ over the freshly ploughed fields of Great Barford as a kid and holding on to my mate’s big brothers motorbike as I rode back home on my Peugeot racer bike as he accelerated to the point that my tyres glowed a brighter red than all 4 cheeks. Yet my partner is desperate to own a Vespa so that’s good enough for me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eResearch is a big part of the planning and the key detail that kept coming up was the ‘Battle of Brighton’ where the two groups caused havoc. That got me thinking, I focused on the pure passion that both sides had for their own whilst also the dislike they also held for their rivals. As Paula Abdul once told me, opposites attract so that was my hook for this piece.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat we see is the moment where two people, a Mod and a Rocker choose to meet and defy the rules to be together. Whether that be a courting couple or just mates is up to you but I love the sentiment, like a modern take on Romeo and Juliet, possibly. A sweet sacrifice.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis image is all about what you don’t see that makes it so personal. I wanted to create a beautiful piece of art yet one that has an edge to it. That got me thinking, I focused on the pure passion that both sides had for their own whilst also the dislike they also held for their rivals. Football has always dominated my childhood and I’ve never lost the love for the beautiful game. \u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have so many vivid memories as a kid being taken to football matches by my Dad, Michael, be it Saturdays at Luton Town or long trips up to Elland Road. Yet it was the real treat when you were taken to Wembley to watch an England game, it was always about how you felt seeing those famous towers and all of the football coaches parked up that I remember more than the game itself. Coming home with a flag or sweatbands that you would cherish long after the game.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI’ve only been to the new Wembley once (all part of being a Leeds fan!) and whilst it is a magnificent arena it is nothing in comparison to the stature of seeing those towers appear. So that was the aim for this piece, to create a scene where the stadium loomed up suddenly between buildings with a real sense of magnificence. Nostalgia personified.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat we see took an absolute age as I wanted to create a perfect scenario within the London street scene. I wanted to feature an iconic green tiled boozer and a proper old-school high street shop that we can all relate to. I saw the opportunity to link nicely in with the format of ‘The Memory Remains’ and I am really pleased with how it has turned out!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe piece is actually celebrating the World Cup win of 1966 with so much of the details paying homage to the Ramsey boys who lifted the ‘Jules Rimet’, there are some really subtle but beautiful details for you to seek out. However, the more you look you realise that the scene is actually set in the late 80’s, references to ‘Live Aid’ and the Queen sell out Wembley concert all help to build the story.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThose who follow my work closely will know that I love to inject a multi-layered narrative where possible and this is the case with this piece. ‘Greavsies Rentals’ is a quirky TV rental shop like so many of us can remember. This detail in itself provided a really great quality to the scene but right from the start I had wanted to feature a reference to the wheeler and dealer Del Boy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI had originally intended to just have his three wheeler parked up in the side street but the more personality that grew from the rentals shop and the questionable quality of the goods I chose to showcase the source of the TV’s by insinuating that it was actually Mr Trotter himself that was supplying Greavsie! It is just a wonderful bit of randomness that I feel takes this piece away from simply being able to be embraced by football fans. My biggest musical regret was missing out on the iconic Oasis at Knebworth concert as it was just down the road from me and my mates had the time of their lives there. I remember listening to it unfold on local radio and from then on, I was hooked. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs like the brilliance of the nu-metal bands in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, the ‘Madchester’ era was like no other, what a phenomenal number of bands from such a concentrated spot in the U.K. My aim was to capture this along with a large number of iconic references that we remember well from that period.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe very first seed for this piece started years back and it was going to focus on the iconic Hacienda yet that switched to what we see here where we focus on the earlier stages of each band where they played in dark and cramped clubs. Collectors really loved the street scene and my aim for ‘Mad For It’ was to create a music driven piece that had similar traits to the street that was littered with details but from another era.\n\u003cp\u003eI was lucky enough to be a kid in the 80’s but wow what a decade the 90’s were to be a teenager in! I started off being drawn more to the likes of the Chemical Brothers and the Prodigy, oh and randomly 70’s disco classics! My biggest musical regret was missing out on the iconic Oasis at Knebworth concert as it was just down the road from me and my mates had the time of their lives there. I remember listening to it unfold on local radio and from then on, I was hooked. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs like the brilliance of the nu-metal bands in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, the ‘Madchester’ era was like no other, what a phenomenal number of bands from such a concentrated spot in the U.K. My aim was to capture this along with a large number of iconic references that we remember well from that period.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe very first seed for this piece started years back and it was going to focus on the iconic Hacienda yet that switched to what we see here where we focus on the earlier stages of each band where they played in dark and cramped clubs. As like ‘The Memory Remains’ piece that gave you a glimpse of what lay inside, we get the same intrigue here with a look into the smoke-filled venue where all of the bands played before moving onwards and upwards.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always loved music album cover artwork and there are quite a few for you to spot, some subtle whilst the most blatant being the iconic floating Rolls Royce that was inspired by the Oasis ‘Be Here Now’ album cover.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI will leave you to seek out all of the details, some are completely random as you have come to expect from me – anyone who can explain the ‘Flipper’ dolphin reference is worthy of wearing a crown for the day! So, what you see is actually brutal yet beautiful, something that I have often embraced in darker pieces where we consider the negative as an art form and a thing of beauty through striving to master ones’ skill.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI also always intended to overlay the scene with gameplay screen details such as the ‘life bar’ and scores but I decided against this once I saw how intense and real the scene had become and it really felt like you were stood there watching the fight unfold rather than simply playing a game. We may have been setting He-Man and his companions out on the shag pile carpet or on the kitchen table but in our head we were in Eternia and we weren’t leaving until it was time for dinner!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wish I had my toys still but I, along with my Brothers and Sister played the hell out of them so they ended up in the ‘Sandy Sunshine playgroup’ jumble stall. A low point was playing with the Sorceress (ooh err) on De-Panne beach and being called back for a ride on the go-carts and forgetting the winged beauty only to return to see the tide take her away. MERDE!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCastle Grayskull was one of the best, if not the best toys I owned, damn it brings it all back just thinking about it! This piece was always going to focus on it, with the aim of building a magical landscape that I have done so many times throughout my ‘Storyteller’ works but then take it to a different direction by showing what I so often eluded to, yet maintaining integrity and not buggering about with them and making them into something that they weren’t and instead making them come to life, to be less plastic. Through my signature lighting style and the magical detailing that I inject, these iconic action figures are hopefully as you pictured them. Anyone else have a possessed Ram Man? So I have created a street scene that focuses on an ageing shop that is full of all of the amazing things that you draw from when reminiscing, there is an enchanting window display with toys and games in front of a strong purple curtain that hints at more wonders further into the shop that are obscured.\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThere is a message on the shopfront warning people that objects in the shop window appear larger in your head - playing on the fact that when you think back to getting a present the box was so much bigger than it actually was, castle greyskull for me was just that, the box seemed to be 10ft wide. There is a grabber placed in the window above the display, the idea here is that it represents your brain where it can grab an object and it’s memory and plant it in your head - the shop is exactly that - it represents your memories hence the sign saying the shop is always open.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt is these deep rooted memories that stay with us and are ageless regardless of everything outside that changes over time. To support the street scene there is also a hint of an old cinema and arcade that shows the overlaid posters to give that sense of time passing. There is so much to see, some blatant, some really subtle like the family photos that have been engrained into the wood. I have used maple leaves to add detail to the scene, these work nicely to interact with the objects and have featured green to red to further signify time passing. You would think that bringing a football and his boys to the studio grounds with a vast lawn, lake and woods would be a sure thing for them to have a great time but sadly no. Without their phones or tablets they don’t have any desire to be kids and go and play. Sad really. Whilst I appreciate that not all kids are like that, nor do I think every child wants to act out the adventures of the ‘Secret Seven’ or ‘The Famous Five’, it just reinforces to me just how things are so glaringly different for us when we where their age. Oh, the good old days eh! \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e It was an age where everything seemed so much more fun and when kids really played with freedom and imagination, and the only 'influencer' was the person who told you to be back for tea. So, when the bell rang out, it kick-started six weeks of scorched grass and grazed knees, grabbing your bike and having the absolute time of your life, day after day, and for the days when it rained, there was kids TV! Luckily our innocent little eyes were oblivious to 'Bungle' being a bit, well, dodgy! So where do you go when you've burnt your arse on that huge metal slide in the park?... To the Lido of course! \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I have such vivid memories of my summer break from school as a kid growing up in the 80’s, is that because everything was bolder and brighter back then or because I, like you, really lived and loved every day. It is those days of being free and with your family and friends that stand out over any major holiday abroad. I lived close to a great park back then, the river was just down the ‘court’ from our house, and we were just a 5-minute train journey to our local outdoor swimming pool. It’s funny because I’m pretty sure that it didn’t look like what I’ve just created, but that’s the whole point isn’t it. Everything is always bigger and brighter when you reminisce. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The lido that you see within ‘Skool’s Out! 2’ is based on the iconic ‘Saltdean Lido in Brighton, primarily for its cracking architecture, I love how the community there have kick-started the renovations to bring it back to life. Secondly, the client who commissioned ‘The Memory Remains’ is from Brighton, so it continues the story where those toys went with their new owners. Like I said before, the holidays were all about being with your family and friends, so there are bikes everywhere and two deckchairs in view, one for you and one for your best mate. Toys and teddies are littering the Serengeti-esque grass and taking over the pool. I like to think differently, so I’m going to bet my ‘Fat Willy’s hat that this is the first time you’ve seen Humpty riding an inflatable flamingo! \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI’ve thrown everything into this piece, it’s chaotic and wonderfully random and comes from such a great place. I never set out with a set list of references to include, and this is a cracking example of how, when you open your mind back up, you are overwhelmed with those little details that have remained dormant for years. It’s a piece that I didn’t want to stop but it had to or risk becoming like one of those ‘Where’s Wally’ jigsaws! I genuinely hope that my love for my childhood shines through here and that it stirs up so many amazing memories for you lot, my collectors are fucking brilliant, and we are all in this together. It’s the same for a song or movie title, it has to capture the mood and very essence of what has been created.\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e ‘The Memory Remains’ was taken from a Metallica track that was on at the time yet was so perfect and has since been mentioned a few times! Sometimes the title becomes clear midway through the project, very rarely at the start. Yet this one was not until the very end, not that it was a bad thing. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The plan was always to create a nostalgia loaded image that pulled on the heart strings and was as cute as it was fun. The positioning of what you now see was always going to sit alongside ‘The Memory Remains’ series just like ‘Skool’s Out! 1 and 2 do, as they are all linked mainly through that initial day out to the toy shop, arcade, or cinema. However, the title couldn’t link to ‘The Memory Remains’ pieces as I wanted it to be able to viewed in its own right. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e So, what started out as a challenge to find the perfect title moved away from something that could have been whimsical and warm to something so perfect as more and more toys were added to the bedroom. So, if those words were ever uttered by a child of that age, it without a doubt would have resulted in being sent straight to their room, but is that such a bad thing?! Just look at that room! \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I know so many of you loved ‘The Memory Remains 2’ because of your affiliation with so many of the toys for sale within the toy shop and I hope you will fall in love with this piece just as much. So many of those toys have been bought and are laid out within the bedroom as well as so many cracking new additions that you may have forgotten about until now. ‘Bollocks to Bedtime’ is every big kids dream and is full to bursting with references that guarantees you will be saying ‘oh yeah I had one of those!’. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI wanted to capture that wonderful excitement that we had as a kid when we had so many toys that we truly loved, nothing compares to that era, our kids live in a very different world now. I was so pleased that it was so perfect, but it then amplified the concept of it being impossible to go to sleep and they were determined to stay up all night. I wanted this piece to hit you right between the eyes, to stimulate your senses and therefore I had to find the balance between being a visual feast and being too cluttered where the impact was compromised.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAs with the majority of my work you don’t get to see the lead characters, it is the setting and the detail that tells the story and with this piece it opens up the question - who are driving these machines? Could it be all of the movie characters have met up within the desert to watch a cracking car movie, hanging out around the fire, eating corn dogs, listening to Guns \u0026amp; Roses and a dirty V8? I continually kept challenging myself throughout this piece, how could I make things that were already cool, cooler, to change everything up a gear or two. For example, how do you make an already cracking sky pop even more? Add a bloody space shuttle launch that’s how! Is it possible to make the Delorean any cooler? Well I’ve added a Jackal stood arrogantly in front of it so possibly!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt is so easy to focus on the cars that are clearly on view, look closely though - seems someone has left the party early? I absolutely bloody love music, it has always had and always will have a huge influence in my art. I need music to set me free, to let me bleed.\n\u003cp\u003eI love how an allegiance to a group can completely dominate the music you listen to, the clothes you wear and the wheels that you ride in on. I love how it becomes so much greater than the sum of it’s parts, how it takes over and becomes a way of life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e‘Quadrophenia’ has long been on the list of films to tackle for me, it was simply about timing. The cult groups of the Mods and Rockers are so iconic and seeing as though the subject matter has been ‘done to death’ and largely in the same way I wanted to do something a little different.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI won’t profess to belonging to either of the two. I can’t ride a motorbike or a scooter, the closest I came was getting a bone-shaking ‘backy’ over the freshly ploughed fields of Great Barford as a kid and holding on to my mate’s big brothers motorbike as I rode back home on my Peugeot racer bike as he accelerated to the point that my tyres glowed a brighter red than all 4 cheeks. Yet my partner is desperate to own a Vespa so that’s good enough for me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eResearch is a big part of the planning and the key detail that kept coming up was the ‘Battle of Brighton’ where the two groups caused havoc. That got me thinking, I focused on the pure passion that both sides had for their own whilst also the dislike they also held for their rivals. As Paula Abdul once told me, opposites attract so that was my hook for this piece.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat we see is the moment where two people, a Mod and a Rocker choose to meet and defy the rules to be together. Whether that be a courting couple or just mates is up to you but I love the sentiment, like a modern take on Romeo and Juliet, possibly.
