The brilliantly titled ‘Bollocks to Bedtime!’ is every big kids dream and is full to bursting with references that guarantees you will be saying ‘oh yeah I had one of those!’. Mark has also further demonstrated his ability to create jaw-dropping movie art in his signature style with a breath-taking mash up of Steven Spielberg’s most loved movies that makes 4DX and IMAX look like a Punch and Judy show! Staying with movies, the sold out ‘Petrolheads’ is now available in Mark’s incredibly popular VHS format

Time for something new! In contrast to Mark’s insanely detailed scene pieces, his abstract and bold ‘Lunatics and Legends’ series is transformed with the introduction of four heroes and villains now offered in a playing card format that is float framed to complement his VHS and Storybook editions. It just works beautifully!

NOW for WOW! Taking inspiration from the music compilation albums that were a firm favourite at Christmas time, both from Santa and a ‘go to’ choice at vol-au-vent fuelled family gatherings, we are so excited to launch the first instalment of ‘WOW That’s What I F*cking Call Memories!’ - available in both cassette and Vinyl LP formats but sadly not available in ‘Our Price’ or ‘MVC’. For those of you who are always hoping for something different, tactile, and ridiculously nostalgic, this should be music to your ears!

As ever, Mark has worked tirelessly to create a captivating collection, designed to pull on the heart strings just like you’d pull on the seat belt and head down to Argos or Toy’s R Us. One thing is for sure, choosing your favourite is a ‘toughie’, likened only to trying to pick a favourite from the ‘Woolies’ pick ‘n’ mix on a Saturday.

‘Retrospective 4’, along with so many of Mark’s nostalgic pieces, gives you the excuse to take time out from a life firmly set on fast forward and simply pause, rewind and play.

Description

Specs

Delivery

So, as I write this narrative, it is a week or so into the summer holidays, my daughter is sunning herself in Spain and I’m watching the sheer frustration of my mate who is struggling to get his two young boys to do anything meaningful whilst he is sat with me having a cuppa. You would think that bringing a football and his boys to the studio grounds with a vast lawn, lake and woods would be a sure thing for them to have a great time but sadly no. Without their phones or tablets they don’t have any desire to be kids and go and play. Sad really. Whilst I appreciate that not all kids are like that, nor do I think every child wants to act out the adventures of the ‘Secret Seven’ or ‘The Famous Five’, it just reinforces to me just how things are so glaringly different for us when we where their age. Oh, the good old days eh!

It was an age where everything seemed so much more fun and when kids really played with freedom and imagination, and the only 'influencer' was the person who told you to be back for tea. So, when the bell rang out, it kick-started six weeks of scorched grass and grazed knees, grabbing your bike and having the absolute time of your life, day after day, and for the days when it rained, there was kids TV! Luckily our innocent little eyes were oblivious to 'Bungle' being a bit, well, dodgy! So where do you go when you've burnt your arse on that huge metal slide in the park?... To the Lido of course!

I have such vivid memories of my summer break from school as a kid growing up in the 80’s, is that because everything was bolder and brighter back then or because I, like you, really lived and loved every day. It is those days of being free and with your family and friends that stand out over any major holiday abroad. I lived close to a great park back then, the river was just down the ‘court’ from our house, and we were just a 5-minute train journey to our local outdoor swimming pool. It’s funny because I’m pretty sure that it didn’t look like what I’ve just created, but that’s the whole point isn’t it. Like I said before, the holidays were all about being with your family and friends, so there are bikes everywhere and two deckchairs in view, one for you and one for your best mate. Toys and teddies are littering the Serengeti-esque grass and taking over the pool. When ‘Petrolheads’ was first released back in 2018, I had no idea that it would quickly become so popular, but I am so bloody happy that it is so well loved. It was a piece that I had wanted to do for years, it was all about timing and conceiving a scenario that could be the most engaging and ultimately successful, to create the ultimate movie car piece, no holds barred! From the reaction since, I think I achieved that!

At the point of planning there were so many iconic vehicles that could have gone in with equal success, even with being selective. I wanted this piece to hit you right between the eyes, to stimulate your senses and therefore I had to find the balance between being a visual feast and being too cluttered where the impact was compromised.

As with the majority of my work you don’t get to see the lead characters, it is the setting and the detail that tells the story and with this piece it opens up the question - who are driving these machines? Could it be all the movie characters have met up within the desert to watch a cracking car movie, hanging out around the fire, eating corn dogs, listening to Guns & Roses and a dirty V8? Or is it simply a group of enthusiasts doing just that? Over to you.

A lot has happened since the print edition was first released, there has been a sequel and a James Bond edition to add to collectors’ walls. In addition to creating nostalgic driven (excuse the pun) art, I have really focused on delivering exciting and engaging new formats to showcase my work. One of those has been the incredibly popular and versatile VHS edition. It has been so successful because of its uniqueness, it’s compact size and the level of hand embellishing that all come together to create something truly special to display in a tight space or as part of a number of them together.

So, given the fact that the very reason for so many of these iconic movie cars and their characters to have gathered deep within the desert was to watch a film on the big screen, it just made perfect sense to turn it into a movie, of sorts! So late into 2022, ‘Petrolheads the Movie’ gets its big release on the small screen! As well as a cracking image, the level of detail to enjoy is superb, it’s the small touches that come together to give it a real aged quality, frayed edges, a scratched and scuffed VHS cover, a crumpled sticker from the video rental shop that seems to have been defaced! So grab a Coors and a corn dog and prepare to blow a gasket at Petrolheads the Movie!

Released: 2022

Collection: Retrospective 4

Edition Size: 20 + 5AP

Specification:
- Hand embellished
- Floated VHS and double mount
- Custom spray-painted frame
- Sticker decals
- Hand signed by artist

Image Size: 8.3” x 11.7"

Framed Size (Approx): 13.5” x 16.75”

Get in touch for overseas delivery

Please allow approximately 21 days for delivery, should you need delivery sooner please let us know.

Description

Specs

Delivery

I first introduced ‘Lunatics and Legends’ in 2020 as an exciting alternative to my intense, narrative-driven scene pieces. A much more blatant, ‘in your face’ abstract style of mixed media work that was all about the texture and embraced my blurred ‘push and pull’ method of creating a digital image.

I had used the style long before this for much more niche subjects, so it was great to go to town on big superheroes and twisted villains. Despite these pieces not relying on a multi-layered narrative to solve what you see, there is still that element to them where the lines between who is the hero and who is the villain are as blurred as parts of the image itself.

A lot has happened in the past couple of years, and I am so pleased to see the success of this style of work whilst I have been busy conceiving and delivering exciting and engaging new formats to showcase my art. One of those has been the incredibly popular and versatile VHS edition, largely due to the compact size and the level of hand embellishing that all come together to create something truly special. The Story Book editions evolved from this earlier this year and through being sized and framed the same, can be displayed side by side with the VHS editions.

So, for something new and another pun, I’ve been keeping my cards close to my chest recently, teasing you lot on what I had ready to reveal. Well, it’s time to show my hand, I am proud to introduce the playing card editions! Featuring four float-mounted cards that each display either a hero or villain, who is which depends on you.

Each card is hand finished to appear aged and scuffed, with the occasional splatter of blood (not actual blood!) thrown over them. The backboard is heavily embellished with paints, with each one being different. The frame features a charred gold inlay that is starting to crumble away to reinforce the darkness that runs through the characters, reminiscent of the battles that they fight or force. I was pretty confident that this format would work beautifully, and I think I may just have laid down the ace card.

So, what do you think? However, it didn’t start that well looking back at my earlier choices! I’m man enough to admit that my first vinyl single was Andy Stewart’s ‘Donald Where’s Your Troosers’. Please tell me I’m not alone on this one! I’ve just put it on now and I genuinely have no idea what I was thinking, it’s woeful! How do I follow that up? Ok, so my first vinyl LP album that I bought? ‘Soul Provider’ by Michael ‘the hair’ Bolton. I was a shy little beast back then. I must have had Georgia on my mind from those smoky school discos! Taking inspiration from the music compilation albums that were a firm favourite at Christmas time, both from Santa and a ‘go to’ choice at vol-au-vent fuelled family gatherings, ‘Retrospective 4’ sees the launch of the first instalment of ‘WOW That’s What I F*cking Call Memories!’ Clever eh! Beneath this is a quirky cassette that is unravelling before your eyes, showing that the request has been well and truly ignored. I’m sure I’m not alone in being guilty of ruining many a tape when trying to record the Top 40 on a Sunday or typically when borrowing a friend’s cherished album.

I hope you love this, the attention to detail is off the charts!

Released: 2022

Collection: Retrospective 4

Edition Size: 5 Original Variations

Specification:
- Hand embellished and heavily painted heavyweight canvas
- Custom Frame
- Hand signed by artist

Image Size: 32” x 24"

Framed Size (Approx): 38” x 32”

Get in touch for overseas delivery

Please allow approximately 21 days for delivery, should you need delivery sooner please let us know.

Description

Specs

Delivery

Ok, so for those who have followed my work closely for years, you will know that music plays a prominent and inspiring role in both my art and my life. If there is then please share it. It’s funny, sometimes I feel choosing a title for a piece can be as hard as conceiving the concept for it. It’s the same for a song or movie title, it has to capture the mood and very essence of what has been created.

‘The Memory Remains’ was taken from a Metallica track that was on at the time yet was so perfect and has since been mentioned a few times! Sometimes the title becomes clear midway through the project, very rarely at the start. Yet this one was not until the very end, not that it was a bad thing.

The plan was always to create a nostalgia loaded image that pulled on the heart strings and was as cute as it was fun. The positioning of what you now see was always going to sit alongside ‘The Memory Remains’ series just like ‘Skool’s Out! 1 and 2 do, as they are all linked mainly through that initial day out to the toy shop, arcade, or cinema. However, the title couldn’t link to ‘The Memory Remains’ pieces as I wanted it to be able to viewed in its own right.

So, what started out as a challenge to find the perfect title moved away from something that could have been whimsical and warm to something so perfect as more and more toys were added to the bedroom. So, if those words were ever uttered by a child of that age, it without a doubt would have resulted in being sent straight to their room, but is that such a bad thing?! Just look at that room!

I know so many of you loved ‘The Memory Remains 2’ because of your affiliation with so many of the toys for sale within the toy shop and I hope you will fall in love with this piece just as much. So many of those toys have been bought and are laid out within the bedroom as well as so many cracking new additions that you may have forgotten about until now. ‘Bollocks to Bedtime’ is every big kids dream and is full to bursting with references that guarantees you will be saying ‘oh yeah I had one of those!’.

I wanted to capture that wonderful excitement that we had as a kid when we had so many toys that we truly loved, nothing compares to that era, our kids live in a very different world now. Not all bad of course but nothing will ever come close to the magic back then, amplified as I sit here with thoughts turning to Christmas and the utter brilliance of my memories as a kid around that time. You cherished every toy and immersed yourself in your imagination that grew from that interaction.

What we see is a room that is full to bursting with fun at that point where the kids have scarpered into their hiding places as the door opens, shining a warm light onto their toys and games. Can you really blame them? It’s impossible to sleep when you are wide awake with excitement. The longer that I worked on this piece, the more references that I added from being consumed with my memories as well as wanting to create the connection for you guys. It was about twelve hours into a very long day here and my bulldog George was sending me evils, when at the point of thinking I was finished, the title popped into my head. I was so pleased that it was so perfect, but it then amplified the concept of it being impossible to go to sleep and they were determined to stay up all night. I know this falls within my ‘Retrospective’ body of work but I always look to include a movie scene as this collection tends to fall just ahead of the festive season and there aren’t many better times to watch a blockbuster than at Christmas.

My movie art is typically within my ‘Lost in Hollywood’ series and if you look at this piece and what is going on, then you well and truly are just that, or possibly legged it in Hollywood! I have wanted to do a full-on movie ‘mash up’ for a good while now as I have always enjoyed the prospect of different movies all playing out at the same time and seeing the chaos that ensues. Building on this, I also knew that there was cracking potential to showcase a specific film director each time as each attracts a die-hard following. So here we are in 2022 and the premier of ‘Spielberg’s Hollywood’.

So, initially the plan was to set this within the cinema itself, which would have been great and still can be but given the type of films that Spielberg has mastered and that I have loved depicting in past works, I felt that I needed more space for the mayhem to unfurl and I do love a gritty street scene. A retro styled movie theatre is the backdrop to an alleyway that is literally littered with detail and references to some of his most incredible movies, some more blatant than others!

Everything is always bigger and brighter when you reminisce.

The lido that you see within ‘Skool’s Out! 2’ is based on the iconic ‘Saltdean Lido in Brighton, primarily for its cracking architecture, I love how the community there have kick-started the renovations to bring it back to life. Secondly, the client who commissioned ‘The Memory Remains’ is from Brighton, so it continues the story where those toys went with their new owners. Like I said before, the holidays were all about being with your family and friends, so there are bikes everywhere and two deckchairs in view, one for you and one for your best mate. Toys and teddies are littering the Serengeti-esque grass and taking over the pool. I like to think differently, so I’m going to bet my ‘Fat Willy’s hat that this is the first time you’ve seen Humpty riding an inflatable flamingo!

I’ve thrown everything into this piece, it’s chaotic and wonderfully random and comes from such a great place. I never set out with a set list of references to include, and this is a cracking example of how, when you open your mind back up, you are overwhelmed with those little details that have remained dormant for years. It’s a piece that I didn’t want to stop but it had to or risk becoming like one of those ‘Where’s Wally’ jigsaws! I genuinely hope that my love for my childhood shines through here and that it stirs up so many amazing memories for you lot, my collectors are fucking brilliant, and we are all in this together. So, dive in, there’s no risk of verruca’s or floaters and heavy petting IS allowed here!

Released: 2022

Collection: Retrospective

Edition Size: 45 +5AP

Specification: Limited edition fine art print, hand signed by artist.

Image Size: 25” x 18.5"

Framed Size (Approx): 32” x 26"

Get in touch for overseas delivery

Available for immediate despatch or collection
