The end result was a sold-out piece in all formats and the most requested piece to date. \n\nThe aim was to leave a lot open to interpretation through not seeing the drivers but creating a scene that showed movement and interaction albeit out of shot. I wanted to convey a sense of belonging and affiliation through the Petrolheads club and in that instance it was a gathering in front of a drive in movie screen. Known for my art of storytelling I set off with the view that this would evolve into a series of pieces that plays out their journey. There is so much potential here through my love for movies and cars but not to the point where it mirrors the ‘Fast \u0026amp; Furious’ franchise – I think we are up to film number 9?!\n\nThe overriding concept for Petrolheads 2 is a continuation of where we left of with Petrolheads, the cars and their drivers have watched the movie and aren’t done yet, they still have gas in the tank. So, where do they go where there are no limits? To an abandoned raceway set in the desert beneath the backdrop of the stunning Nevada mountains. Everything that made the first piece so successful has been amplified, the colours are more dramatic, the composition also, there are more cars, more magic, more detail, more things to seek out.\n\nThe desert sun is starting to come up as the cars thrash around the circuit towards you, pedal to the metal, full throttle! All the favourites are there, some slower than others but they have been joined by many, many more. They are in it for the sheer love of it regardless of the number of horses that they are pulling. Who will take the chequered flag and who could be holding it? So the idea being when you’re doing your research of the film plus being aware of the fact that the follow up ‘Maverick’ is due out this year (hopefully), you are looking at the concept that the US Navy air base ‘Miramar’ is now redundant and laying there derelict and weathered which is something that goes back to the ‘Storyteller’ collections of mine where you’re embracing that sense of neglect and time passing. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSo that’s what we see here, Maverick has returned, he’s come back on his iconic motorbike and this is where the piece took a different turn. I have injected this underlying narrative that plays on the fact that he lost his flying partner ‘Goose’ but also the ghosts that he carries with him from his father and that’s referenced within the piece, you’ll see his dad’s crashed plane for example along with another that was fighting in Vietnam. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e If you look closely at the bike, you’ll see ‘Goose’s’ partially destroyed crash helmet, so Maverick is literally carrying his ghosts around with him, as well as his baggage which is depicted through his flight holdall which is carrying all of all of his memories around with him. On first glance it just looks like a cracking way of being able to get all of those movie references in it but then there’s this underlying concept that’s much deeper and hopefully people will relate to that even if they aren’t necessarily a massive fan of the film but that the image and what it symbolises strikes a chord with them. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I’ve tried to create pictures within a picture, so if you look at Charlie’s Porsche for example, it’s just a beautiful part of the image and I absolutely love how that’s come out. When you’re watching the film and making notes it’s great to be able to get those references in there, big or small and there’s so much going on because that’s the concept, it’s him returning and all of his memories flooding back and being played out in front of him. He knows he has to go on a journey, he’s just not sure where it’s going to take him. So the idea being when you’re doing your research of the film plus being aware of the fact that the follow up ‘Maverick’ is due out this year (hopefully), you are looking at the concept that the US Navy air base ‘Miramar’ is now redundant and laying there derelict and weathered which is something that goes back to the ‘Storyteller’ collections of mine where you’re embracing that sense of neglect and time passing. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSo that’s what we see here, Maverick has returned, he’s come back on his iconic motorbike and this is where the piece took a different turn. I have injected this underlying narrative that plays on the fact that he lost his flying partner ‘Goose’ but also the ghosts that he carries with him from his father and that’s referenced within the piece, you’ll see his dad’s crashed plane for example along with another that was fighting in Vietnam. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIf you look closely at the bike, you’ll see ‘Goose’s’ partially destroyed crash helmet, so Maverick is literally carrying his ghosts around with him, as well as his baggage which is depicted through his flight holdall which is carrying all of all of his memories around with him. On first glance it just looks like a cracking way of being able to get all of those movie references in it but then there’s this underlying concept that’s much deeper and hopefully people will relate to that even if they aren’t necessarily a massive fan of the film but that the image and what it symbolises strikes a chord with them. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI’ve tried to create pictures within a picture, so if you look at Charlie’s Porsche for example, it’s just a beautiful part of the image and I absolutely love how that’s come out. When you’re watching the film and making notes it’s great to be able to get those references in there, big or small and there’s so much going on because that’s the concept, it’s him returning and all of his memories flooding back and being played out in front of him. He knows he has to go on a journey, he’s just not sure where it’s going to take him. It’s a classic darkness and light concept that I love to work with and showing how closely that they can reside within a person, within a building, within their four walls. That was the aim to create something really dark, really beautiful but in a completely different way through showing the characters and touching on the battles that are going on within their heads and what that can ultimately lead to. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe decision to introduce the characters was a big one, it can spoil a piece, but the aim was to have them so that they are literally bleeding out onto the canvas, with sheer emotion that’s captured through the detailing. The idea being with the asylum is that it’s so difficult to leave but so easy to return and that takes on so many meanings. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis piece shows that contrast between the pure, sinister side of the Heath Ledger character where he’s absolutely seething within the shadows but then in complete contrast, we go across to Joaquin Phoenix where he’s totally lost in his own world. There’s no acknowledgement to the destruction that he’s causing, no remorse but ultimately happier and it’s showing how that can completely escalate and morph through. It’s a classic darkness and light concept that I love to work with and showing how closely that they can reside within a person, within a building, within their four walls. That was the aim to create something really dark, really beautiful but in a completely different way through showing the characters and touching on the battles that are going on within their heads and what that can ultimately lead to. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The decision to introduce the characters was a big one, it can spoil a piece, but the aim was to have them so that they are literally bleeding out onto the canvas, with sheer emotion that’s captured through the detailing. The idea being with the asylum is that it’s so difficult to leave but so easy to return and that takes on so many meanings. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis piece shows that contrast between the pure, sinister side of the Heath Ledger character where he’s absolutely seething within the shadows but then in complete contrast, we go across to Joaquin Phoenix where he’s totally lost in his own world. There’s no acknowledgement to the destruction that he’s causing, no remorse but ultimately happier and it’s showing how that can completely escalate and morph through. This coupled with producing ‘Summer Lovin’ during the early stages of the Covid-19 ‘lockdown’ I embraced the lighter side and the end result is just pure good fun and whimsically retro, as well as bloody bizarre in places! \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe scene is set within the sports fields of Rydell High School during the Graduation Festival with the iconic Hollywood hills in the distance. It’s a beautiful Summer’s day, with balloons, bubbles and butterflies in the air with the fair in full swing! The styling for the piece was influenced by a much earlier ‘Mary Poppins’ piece entitled ‘Cast Off Your Shackles’ with the warm contrast between the grass and the sky, an ultimately cute scene that masks some of the subtle naughtiness that has been left by the high school leavers. In past pieces I have shown a carousel but this time I have gone with a cracking helter-skelter that not only looks perfect but allows me to hang so much detail to it, maybe the odd familiar face too! \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e A common theme within ‘Lost in Hollywood 3’ is the cars, any opportunity and all that! It was impossible to even contemplate not including ‘Greased Lightning’ as well as the flame-clad beast driven by Leo “Crater face” Batmudo, leader of the Scorpions whilst not forgetting the powder pink beauty driven by Rizzo and the Pink Ladies! \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMusic is always a big part of my work and the ‘Grease’ movie soundtrack offers so many cracking lines that I have loved to make reference in my signature way and hidden for you to seek out. With the composition it is a case of what you can’t see being equally important as what you can. I love to set it out so you can play out the film in your way, to become your favourite character and decide what is going on or about to. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe great element with preparing for the piece is the research, to sit down and watch the film, albeit stop start to allow for pages of notes. This is how you stumble across random little details that crop up that you never knew about, this combined with online research and fan pages it really magics up some cracking details that I then set about trying to integrate into my image. So, for those who may be wondering if I’ve been sinking a few too many ‘Blue Moon’s recently, well yes but the two-headed chicken and eight-legged pig are a thing apparently! Who knew?! Without doubt one of the most random tasks creating those in the studio as there’s not many points of reference floating about! \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e I am so pleased with how ‘Summer Lovin’ has turned out, I’ve not seen an interpretation like it, and I hope I have done it justice and that it makes you feel great. The seed is well and truly planted in my head for a sequel to this sometime in the future! I was so desperate to do a ‘Pulp Fiction’ scene-based piece that I just took the decision to create the scene entirely from scratch and make my own interpretation of the diner, not an easy task! \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe piece is with the concept that things didn’t quite go as planned and that’s the thing with this film, it’s absolute pure brilliance that things happen on pure chance and it’s so close to things occurring in a different way and that’s what’s played out here. They didn’t win the dance contest, that’s what Mia wanted to do, she wanted to dance, she wanted to win, and she wanted that trophy and it’s showing the brutality of the film but in a quirky way. They didn’t win the dance contest, that’s what Mia wanted to do, she wanted to dance, she wanted to win, and she wanted that trophy and it’s showing the brutality of the film but in a quirky way. There are so many iconic quotes within the film that sometimes you forget the extreme nature of what’s going on with the plot, the weapons and the gangster element to it. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e So, it’s a scene of complete destruction that’s glossed over with the ‘bubble-gum’ feeling with the neon’s and the quirkiness of it and it’s playing on the line from Vincent Vega who described the diner as a ‘wax works with a pulse’. It’s a classic darkness and light concept that I love to work with and showing how closely that they can reside within a person, within a building, within their four walls. That was the aim to create something really dark, really beautiful but in a completely different way through showing the characters and touching on the battles that are going on within their heads and what that can ultimately lead to. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The decision to introduce the characters was a big one, it can spoil a piece, but the aim was to have them so that they are literally bleeding out onto the canvas, with sheer emotion that’s captured through the detailing. The idea being with the asylum is that it’s so difficult to leave but so easy to return and that takes on so many meanings. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis piece shows that contrast between the pure, sinister side of the Heath Ledger character where he’s absolutely seething within the shadows but then in complete contrast, we go across to Joaquin Phoenix where he’s totally lost in his own world. There’s no acknowledgement to the destruction that he’s causing, no remorse but ultimately happier and it’s showing how that can completely escalate and morph through.
